knocking noise from cylinder

I don’t see how this could be related to the problem but I will mention it just in case – I put a timer onto the emersion on/off switch last week.

We’ve just moved into this house and the cylinder is brand new but in the last couple of days each time the timer switch kicks in to heat the water there is a loud knocking noise (not good at 6:30) which seems to be coming from the element. How can I rectify this?

sometimes when the immersion is inserted into the cylinder it touches the heating coil inside.when its turned on it heats and expands causing a rattle.to stop this, gently tap the immersion at the collar(top of cylinder)with a hammer, using a piece of wood as a buffer.its best to do this when its rattling so you know if you are successful.remember gentle taps!!!!!!!!!!
