He might be a little low there but not far off the mark. I think it would be in the region of 350 with not much upward movement.

Most supplement this with servicing other cars at home.

I know one or two like wise.

Any mechanics that I have seen with good money, are those that work at home as well. Working long hours for it, but if you got yourself busy in the evening you'd be fairly well sorted with money, and no time to spend it :p

Try get 2 weeks work experience, although you make have to do it for no money to actually get it, but it'll give you an insight.

Im not a mechanic but from what I have seen if your specialist in a Marque and know your stuff people will travel to get you to work on their car.

A mate of mine has a s2 lotus elise. Rover K Series blew a head gasket the mechanic that fitted another replacement Rover engine  wasnt the greatest. Its down on power plus a host of other problems.
The only specialist for exotics in ireland seems to be in the north and Dublin and you pay through the nose for the service.

I'd say its down to 2 reasons,

    - Garage owners wont pay anything more
    - Its like a mini cartel, the same salary is paid in local garages (20 mile radius) for the experience level you are on.

Or just things aren't busy, the market is flooded and the company is doing the best it can to keep you in a job rather than letting you go?

    Mechanics are paid pinuts usually
Only way to make money, is to become very good, set your own business, be cheap, work a lot of hours and hire several mechanics so you can make a few bobs out of each of them, and on parts of course..And make sure you pay your mechanics as low as possible :p

Frankly I think the mechanics deserve better, given what some charge to service your car...Take main dealers for example, Merc, BMW etc. this is pretty shameful if you ask me.

they only change due to supply concerns, many Lotus heads prefer the K series models.

Mechanics were always poorly paid, I know loads of lads who served their time and after a year or so worked in tyre fitters or motor factors etc as they got paid more even though they were leaving a role where a 4 year qualification was required.

    Very interesting thread here,
I would like to know also whats the going rate for labour per hour in a garage? I remember paying around 65€/hr labour costs about a year ago. This however was not to a main dealer, I would persume main dealers would be more.

I never really thought that a lot of this money wouldnt be filtering down to the mechanics actually doing the work!

Many using the K Series engine are now switching to other engines such as Honda Type R (K20A), Ford and Audi Units due to reliability problems. My mates car has only 32k on it  that said the same guy isnt mechanically inclined but the head gaskets are a common problem. Honda is the most popular for aftermarket engine to fit to the them. Few kits available for driveshafts, gear linkage, cooling etc to fit it into the chassis.

There is a NI Audi one being built (DIY) at the moment: Its very interesting to say the least. 0 - 100kph in well under 5.5sec.
