I didn't do French in school, but I'm studying it intensely this summer, and wanted to now how difficult the French Arts course is at UCC. Would I be able to keep up? What are the classes like? Did you find it difficult. I might only study it for the first and second years, but I don't want to be too weak at it.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

I am a 2nd Year French student going into 3rd Year, and to be honest,it is a difficult course,it requires more time and dedication as you cannot simply digest a language into your mind,it takes time and effort.

You are also required to choose a certain amount of modules on top of the linguistic elements, literature is compulsory, and it is read and studied in French within class (also at home obviously),therefore most people find it imperative to purchase an English version of the select texts.

You have to work harder then most of the non-linguistic Arts courses such as Geography,History etc.But it is worthwhile if you succeed, you even have the option of spending a year abroad in third year in the language of your course, which is what I am doing with French.

Hmm. I fear I may not be good enough for this course at all. :/ Spanish, Italian and Chinese are offered ''ab initio'' though, so I might be better off with one of those. Unfortunately, French is not offered ab initio in Arts I think?

Personally I didn't enjoy French at all. I selected it in Arts in 1st year and it's been a regret of mine ever since. I failed and did another subject.

It's very difficult (I was only very alright at it in school) and requires a large amount of dedication and work. I didn't enjoy it - it was far too difficult, course content was hard to digest and I wasn't too fond of my lecturer - but they're personal thoughts.

Positive points include; a nice department, it's a great place to study (UCC in general) and your class is made up of 10-15 people which is fantastic for making friends -- I'm still great friends with some people I met in that class!

    Also,
I might only study it for the first and second years, but I don't want to be too weak at it.

If you select a subject in 1st year, you can drop it 2nd year. If you choose to keep on the subject you must keep it for 2nd and 3rd year.

Do the subject if you wish but it requires a lot of passion, dedication and focus.

The thing is,when you pick a language in 1st year, you have the option of doing non-beginners or beginners. So maybe it varies,I for one did non-beginner French.

Really? That would be great. I rang UCC yesterday though, and someone in the Arts department said that French and Irish were the only languages you couldn't do from beginner's level, so maybe it's changed, unfortunately.
