I know this has been gone over and over but there still seems to be lots of confusion, I want to take in an 06 hilux crew cab. Is the vrt €50.00 or the 13%. I am a business owner registered for vat although the vehicle will be registered to me personally for business use.

I think you'll find that it's 13% VRT unless the suspension has been beefed up and it's plated at 3500kg (unlikely if it's a UK vehicle). Only production crew cab 4x4 that is €50 VRT is a Defender 130 plus some Jap ones that had the suspension uprated by the importing dealer.

Hi Sean, thanks for reply however if that is the case then how come so many crewcabs are driving around as commercials, nearly all in Kilkenny. My brother in law has an L200 and it has always been commercial with no mods whatsoever?. Can anyone shed any light here?

The goal posts have shifted over the years as the government were losing revenue. There are 2 classes of commercial VRT costing €50 or 13% depending on loadspace and carrying capacity, if it counted as a passenger vehicle VRT could be up to 40%.

Also commercial road tax is a totally separate matter to VRT and has different rules.
