Not sure if this is the right forum. I was out surfing in Standhill yesterday. The swell was huge. What would cause the swell to be so big? It was blustery but no more than other days. Just curious as to what would cause such a a big swell.Managed to catcha few waves but the wipe outs were pretty bad:)

A number of deep areas of low pressue/storms in the Atlantic over the last week or so would have caused the swell to build up.

Keep an eye on magic seaweed, it has a swell forecast for surfers.

Swell is caused by "old" wind. e.g. having constant westerlies, since high winds 3 days ago off Newfoundland, because of the "fetch", would result in a big swell off the coast here.

Waves are caused by "new" wind.
