Top up by 20 to get free calls and texts, go into extras on vodafone.ie and buy 5gigs of usage for the same 20.
Free calls and texts with 5gigs for 20euro is hard to beat.

It's actually the same 99c a day (for 50MB) if you use the Live apn. (And only applicable to countries in which vodafone have a partner network in...but that does comprise a lot of major countries)

Whats the "live apn" and how do I use it?

Whats the "live apn" and how do I use it?

Basically there's two "Access points" you can connect to. There's the isp one, which charges you per MB....and ends up being pretty expensive! There's also the live one, which should be standard....On the vodafone page linked above it's part of the "Standard rate: Up to €0.99 per day" deal.

To make sure your sim is set up for the live "access point", go to settings -> general -> network -> cellular date network -> then under "cellular data" it should be like:

    APN: live.vodafone.com
    Username: dublin
    Password: dublin

I believe it's usually defaulted to this....but might be different depending on your set up. (changes to a blank space whenever i swap sims with my o2 one)

    Hope this helps :)

    Doesn't work.

I tried .5gb for one day and then got charged on top of it.

    Thanks for your help!

under "network" i cant see any option which says "cellular data network".
The options I get under "network" are
    Enable 3g (on)
    data roaming (on)
    Internet tethering (off)
    VPN (not configured)
    Wi-Fi (not connected)

btw, i just checked my credit and realised i was charged alot more than 99c today for internet so i assume its not connected to the vodafon APN.

    ?????

I'd be very wary of this.

I have a 1Gb data plan with VF (costs EUR 10 per month) and was in Munich recently. When we landed I receievd an SMS from VF saying that if I used data abroad on VF live that I would be charged at the same rates as at home. They gave me a freefone number to call if I had any queries about it.

I called the number to double check before switching on my data roaming and was told that this was not the case and I had to have a special roaming add for this to work. He gave me roaming prices that pretty much equated to EUR 10 per Mb

My advice is double check and triple check before you go

Live apn is like roaming on home network..... Fact
Confirmed by vodafone business care to me only 2 weeks ago. Some cc reps don't know this. Just been in Spain and roamed non stop on both prepay and bill pay with no additional charges.

Go on to the Forum on the Vodafone website, and look at some of the pots there. VF reps have confirmed it repeatedly that using !Live is fine for roaming. I was on the same plan as you, and they confirmed it was ok.

Thanks for the tip, I'm heading off again in a couple of weeks and was actually planning to by a PAYG data card when I arrived as a cheaper form of data roaming. If I can get this cleared it will save me a lot of headaches

I have been looking around the net and can't find any reson why the apn settings don't come up when i go into "network" under settings.
    Anyone know why?

i don't use my phone that much and wouldn't usually spend 20E/month.

on the vf website it says:
You can get Mobile Internet and email at our standard rate of €0.99 per day, whether you're on Prepay or Pay Monthly. And if you use less than 0.5MB, you only pay for the pages you use.

but i'm being charged a lot more than 99c/day and not using it a great amount so i assume apn settings are wrong?

Make sure your signed up for vodafone passport before going! Simple mistake. But then it should be charged at 99c a day on live after.

    Really?

    Using a jailbroken/unofficial unlocked iphone..so i obviously wouldn't have that problem.
(the settings do default to blank though when i swap sim cards..)

Thinking there's two solutions to this:
    1. Changing the apn with the sim card in another phone...would this work?
    2. Jailbreaking. (dunno how exactly this works if you havent unlocked...but there must be a way)

you could do a restore of the phone and then choose not to update the carrier settings...but there's no point as the apn in the carrier settings is the live apn anyway...

If you have OS4 or are running an earlier version and have accepted the carrier file upgrade in iTunes (at which point the ability to change the settings vanishes) then your on device APN will be set to live.vodafone.com and your tethering APN is office.vodafone.ie. So don't use tethering without a bundle ;)

A restore of the phone gives you OS4, which includes the VF IE carrier file. You would need to restore to 3.1.3 or earlier and then refuse the nag screen in iTunes offering you a carrier file upgrade in order to regain access to the settings menu.

Putting in a different sim is pointless, the phone will load the carrier file when it sees a VF sim.

JBing should eventually allow you to use a different carrier file again but so far it isn't possible, as Apple have added a signature check to the entire carrier file (rather than just the Tethering APN) in OS4. Last time I checked, there wasn't a workaround for this signature check.

A quick update on this issue.

I spoke to VF business care today and they confirmed to me that, yes, when roaming with your iPhone and you have a data add-on it will automatically use the vodafonelive APN (if you have an unjailbroken phone then the profile sent to you by Vodafone will automatically set this up for you).

HOWEVER, if you are teethering to your laptop then the phone will switch to a different APN and you will be charged with crazy prices of EUR 5.00 per mB

    Take note.......
