Folks I have a problem here Im trying to sort out for a friend. Her CV was saved by her brother. She cant open it and emailed it to me.
Its coming in as a docx. When I try to open it it seems to be a zipped file. After extracting it I get 3 folders - Word, Docprops and _rels and then a content_types XML file.

Any idea what this is? She needs it asap.

if you have office 2003 you can download a free addon from Microsoft.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

Its a new Xml format that they are using and older versions cant read it otherwise.
    :)

    Yeah...typical microsoft muck.

Openoffice will open it no problem....

docx is that stupid version of Word that was even incompatible with itself.

Her brother should change his 'Save as' default to .doc - Word 97-2003 format.

Yeah we run into that problem at work, you need to remember to save your documents in openoffice as microsoft office files (like .doc) to avoid that problem. Kinda a big deal when you need to email professional stuff :p

She'll look 80 times smarter though (PROVEN CLINICAL FACT) if she saves and emails the CV to employers as a PDF file.

Docx is the default file type in word 2007. It's a bit of a pain but OpenOffice or the compatibility pack linked above sort it.

Xslx is the Excel one. I'm sick of getting the things in work as installing extra software is frowned on.

True. Looks a lot better in PDF.

And it can be read on just about any machine in the world; not just the 3 in 10 that have MS office running on them.

It's times like this I am glad I am learning Latex:) All the tags are just plain text, so if the compiled doc is corrupt, you lose nothing. .docx exists to reduce the compatibility with OpenOffice.
Microsoft/OpenOffice have got to be two of the most sucky pieces of software ever conceived. Seriously, the word culture among most companies today is a disease. Totally and utterly stupid imo.

Some places don't take anything other than word CV's. My rule is, if they don't take plaintext or markup, the company ain't worth working for:pac:

This is true. M$ doesn't want a free open platform competing with their $400 office suite.

It's been a while since i used openoffice but i find office is a lot faster to boot, i hated 2007 or 2003 features but soon got used to them and they're actually really useful to have laid out like that now. I much prefer it over openoffice. Generally openoffice would have difficulty opening some encodings and would just read them terribly wrong. Not to mention it seemed to want me to pick out from a huge list what type of file something was (and would just show up as wrong and i'd have to repeat the process if i got it wrong) where has office is very good at detecting the most probable one.

Now since i haven't used openoffice in a while perhaps it's improved or perhaps i didn't dig enough time into it to learn it.

Plus 1 to pdf. I normally attach doc, docx and pdf cd attachments just in case. That or a link to my google docs version.

Well sure, MS Office is delicious to play with but its also not free. And we're not talking about dropping $40 or anything, the Suite costs more than the OS.

I just think its a wonder they feel threatened by OO if they would focus on improved performance and features, not proprietary file formats.

Embrace, extend, and extinguish my friend. It's been Microsoft's motto since their inception:
