Well I only ever tried trapping magpies and that was this week.

I did learn how much it rains here as the trap was bet out of it with rain.

So my learning was put where it is sheltered.

I have seen a few traps that are fixed on trees so you don't trap rats etc

Hope this is of some help!

Depends on how much your willing to spend on a trap!

The Kania 2000 is probably the best trap around for squirrel!
It fits on the trunk of the tree well off the ground!
This trap along with the tube trap are expensive compared with a live catch cage trap!

If your fairly new to trapping then maybe you should try the live catch cage trap! Its easy to set, and you just set it beside trees in areas that you've seen squirrels!
No need to cover it with anything and use nuts or peanut butter as bait!
Peanut butter is deadly for squerrel but works better in Winter, tends to go off quickley in the warm weather!

Also with the cage you can release non target species!

There's many other types of traps including fens and bodygripers, but i wouldn't advise using them unless you've some experiance with trapping!

    I bought one like this166929_lg.jpg
I baited the ground with dry maize first for a week or so then set it up with peanut butter.

A tunnel measuring 50cm long by 25cm wide and 25cm high with a Fenn trap armed in the centre with some peanut butter or Nutella on the plate will do the business.
Make sure you staple the ring on the end of the chain to the wall of your tunnel, drill 3 holes equidistant at either end and place some light fibreglass rods or reinforcing rods cut to size into them to prevent nontarget species getting caught. Pheasants can have suprisingly long necks. Dont put it anywhere obvious to walkers who can be wan*ers when it comes to trapping tree rats.

I think it is a STV trap,
    Got it on flea bay.
Have caught a good few with it the but got a few rats also.
If you can its better off the ground to keep the rats ouy,
don't like taking them out of it, they give a nasty bite;)

I saw the best trap I have seen ever today, a "rescued" shopping trolley with a bit of additional mesh and the remnants of a bicycle brake cable and a pulley system.

It's not for squirrels, It hopes to be a fox catcher !!

I'll post a pick when I can. I had forgotten my phone and camera!

It's getting its maiden voyage at the week end:D:D
