air conditioning problem

    Hi all,

I brought my car for a service there yesterday, I told the mechanic to have a look at the air conditioning as its blowing out warmish air, certainly not cold air.
He told me I need the aircon to be recharged. He said I could go back to VW but they would charge me a bomb so is there anywhere I can go that offers this service at a cheaper rate?

    thanks

You haven't said where you're based.

A quick google throws up a couple of links posted here before:

I've used the EZ Chill that you can buy in motor factors / halfords successfully on a number of cars of mine over the years. It's about €70 for a can of it which for me I have found is enough to do 2 cars.

I'm not sure if this link will work, but this is the stuff.... http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_201507_langId_-1_categoryId_165632#dtab

mmm is this handy to use? Would it cost much to recharge the aircon by a professional?

Cost me €80 last month to have the system drained, leak tested, cleaned and re-gassed.

John did it for me, an absolute gent: http://www.carairconditioning.ie/

I wouldn't waste your time, for not much more you will get the system drained, leak tested, cleaned and re-gassed as suggested above. No point putting gas in if you have a leak and it could be on the blink due to something else altogether.

45mins including an extended conversation! Your wasting your time with them bottles, the system could do with the service for a very similar price from a professional, bit of a no brainer to me?

    x 2. Exactly!

I've a 1998 Jap Micra and hadn't used the air-con since Oct 2004 but chanced the refill can from an auto-factors. Cost €50 and a month later its still perfect.

It was a chance I took that seems to have worked for me but it doesn't mean it'll work on everyone elses! ;)

I'm based in Dublin so Cork is a bit far

I went down to a mechanice today and he said its leaking! so it would be useless recharging it!

Jesus the guy just said it was leaking. It would be pretty flippant with the money alright to throw gas into a leaking air con system. It's completely pointless regassing a broken aircon system, it could be low on gas but it could be many other things. The last two posts on motors with aircon problems had people mouthing off saying to regas it themselves and both times it turned out to be a comletely different problem.
