Integra Type-R Insurance Help!

    Hey Guys,
Right I've wanted an Integra Type R since I was.......well nearly before I even started driving. I was 19 at the time & knew back then there was no hope! I have now been driving nearly 3 years (two months off) & have nearly 3 years no claims & fully licensed for 2 years. Started off with a punto on prov with quinn for 2000 grand (very harsh) & two years ago moved onto a Civic 1.6 Vtec sport (2005) model. Got insurance for it no prob n currently paying 1300 (I think). So I patiently waited for 3 years & finally looks like I've got a 2002 Integra Type R 2.0 sorted out. Problem though is apparently Quinn don't insure this car to anyone! (like I believe that). So I thought before I start breaking my heart & ringing up a mass amount of insurance companies to have the door closed on me each time or even to be given a quote half the price of the car I thought I'd post here & see if anyone has any advice or harshly wants to let me know that it is never going to happen.....any advice is much appreciated.

How much excess are you prepared to say yes to? Having a €1000 excess opens doors, but is that car worth that?

Honestly I would probably go up to the 1000 euro mark excess. I know the first year insurance on it is going to be high but just want t get my foot in the door really.....Insurance wise I wouldn't except anything over the 2400 mark & that is being very very generous I think. But then again I'm dabbling in an area I know nothing about!

you should cause chances are your gonna add wheels to your taste and other minor mods ( not stereotyping, but anyone who drives a sporty car, makes it sporty to their own prefference )

at the same time their a highly stolen car, brokers Are your best friend, get two and play them off each other ( getting one qoute less then the other )

reach the final low price, then introduce the actual Axa/quinn etc guys to this price.

See if you can shave some money off :)

Insure a low cc car with quinn and swap it over to the DC5 after a week. That's how I got insured on mine.

They will give you a ridiculous renewal quote (I got 3.5k) but you can just do the same thing when that time comes next year

Try Setanta Insurance. I got insurance on my ITR (DC2) for €950 when the next best quote was €1900. The only other companies who would quote me were ARB, Britton, and insure.ie (who Im sure were coming in with ARB). Youll need to go thru a broker for Setanta (I use McCormack Hooper Dolan in Clane) but definately try them; if theyll quote you itll be much cheaper than anyone else.

Steer clear of the main companies (Axa, Quinn, Aviva etc); they have a major bee in their bonnet about anything with any kind of power.

Not everyone who drives cars like that mod them (although that said Im the only person I know with a standard ITR, which is actually what makes it stand out!).

You dont get to play games like that with insurance companies when it comes to insuring cars like Type R Integras. I literally rang every insurance company in the country and tried every broker in my area, and out of probably close to 20 phone calls I got 3 quotes, two of which were ridiculous prices. If you actually get two quotes to compare count yourself lucky! If you get a quote they are not likely to be flexible on it. The major insurance companies in this country (Axa, Quinn, Aviva, FBD etc) will not insure cars like Integras that they deem to be overly powerful sports cars.

By all means try, but Im 99% certain youll be wasting your time. And if you get a quote do not mess about with it for too long as companies are likely to change their mind at the drop of a hat (happened to me with 123 where I got a quote and they revoked it 4 days later).

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I really appreciate it. This gives me a clearer picture now & a bit of hope that I might get the insurance. I must say though when it comes to getting insurance on these cars you really do nearly have to play every trick in the book because you know the insurance crowd would! Then again I do agree that if your gonna play that sort of game then chances are you could get burnt! I might try Britton first before going to a broker. I'll stear clear of the likes of Axa & Hibernian (Axa quoted me 3500 for insurance on my car last year when quinn were offering 1300....) & hopefully everything will play out.

I cant recommend Setanta enough; they were literally half the price of Britton for me this year and last. Give McCormack Hooper Dolan in Clane a call and theyll give you a quote; they are extremely helpful.

Britton is a broker. I just started my 2nd year of insurance & got the best quote from them, with a crowd called Asgard. 2 litre diesel, 1 year NCB & full licence only 8 months, 1200 fully comp. Id say you'd get a great quote from them, there known as being good to deal with if you drive a bigger/more powerfull car. Let us know how you get on.

I will do. Thanks djimi. I have to get the car sorted first but hopefully it wont be too much hassle.....I'll let you's know how I get on.

Never knew Britton were a broker but I've heard good things from a few guys I work with. One got a DC2 Type R insured with them when he just turned 21 for 2000 which I thought was very decent. I'm going to get this car sorted first cause I know any quote I do get will not be around for very long! Hopefully it wont drag out for too much longer but I'll let you's know & hopefully soon enough I'll be able to help someone else down the line in the same dilemma as me..

Do not buy the car before you know you can get a quote on it!!!

Britton are very hit and miss. Sometimes they are very cheap, other times theyll be three times what everyone else is quoting. I think they actually just make up figures depending on the weather...!

So your saying Setanta insurance through that place in clane as a broker? Do setanta only insure through brokers? I'm asking cause i think ill take note myself for next year.

Yeah they only deal thru brokers, and I think only one broker in every town. Worth giving them a shout.

Don't worry wont be buying the car before quote! I would just be asking for trouble! My Girlfriends dad deals with car company that have one & he reckons he could get them to take mine as a trade in & a good deal....so just waiting to hear back on that end. If it doesn't work I'll wait till I have my loan paid off on my car at the moment which is next month & then fire it up on CarZone or one of the sites & cash in & then probably another small loan on top of that to cover cost of car & insurance & tax.....That's the plan so far......

You are right... from my research when the wind is blowing from a north-easterly direction, premiums decrease in the region of 40% .

Seriously these companies are a joke! it depends who you get on the other end of the fone, and I have found a huge price difference between phone and internet prices so do both and pick the cheapest! just try everyone.. twice or three times!

insurance companies have a very bad phobia of type rs. you will have your work cut out for yourself. You will have to ask yourself is it worth it at the end of the day? other makes are much easier to insure but also it is a great car. best of luck

Sorry to post on an old thread but got my DC5 Type R. Absolutely delighted with it. Really really love the car. My insurance with Quinn is due up in October so managed to get them to transfer it from the Civic to the Integra for an extra 86 euro which isn't too bad. I'm sure come October I'll get a ridiculous quote & then I'll try Setanta I think. Again thanks to everyone for the help.

No you wont, you'll get a decent quote, once your in with Quinn they'll renew you no problem with a proper quote, not a sky high one to get you to leave.

    Anyway, wheres the pics?

Thanks very much. Don't think I need to add a thing to the car. Love it the way it is. Really feel for your man sellin it. Was heart broken. I know I'd be the same if I had to sell it.
