    I was reading this http://www2.cao.ie/dir_report/pdf/AppStats01Feb2010.pdf
and it showed an increase in some subjects such as arts...and science ect
but it showed a decrease in Law and a lrge decrease in pharmacy does this mean that there will be a drop in points for law and pharmacy(and othersubjects that have decreased) and a rise in arts and science(and other subjects hat have increased)???

Does anyone know wyhen the points for 2011 are published???

It's safe to say that Arts is going to go up substantially again this year. Last year it went up from 335 to 360 and this year has the highest amount of applications ever through the CAO. So, I wouldn't be surprised if it went up by the same amount or even more this year.

I would be incredibly sceptical regarding Arts' chance of getting near the 400 mark. The courses that really should see an increase are general entry science ones such as Biochem.

Law should drop, but bear in mind that it's rare for points to fall substantially in the space of a year - the points for basic law did decrease last August, but only by 10 points or so. Bearing in mind that trend, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up circa 480/485 ish.

Pharm fluctuates over a narrow range - at its highest I remember it being c. 560, while (I think) last year it was approx. 555. Don't expect it to fall significantly below 545.

When I did my leaving cert back in 2003, UCC had the highest points requirements for Arts in the country. I think it was 410 or thereabouts.

Edit: Just checked and i'm right. The points for Arts in UCC in 2002, the year before I did my leaving, were 400. http://www2.cao.ie/points/DEG02.HTM#ckd

There has been a large increase in applications, especially to Arts courses, so i'd be surprised if the points didn't get up to near 400.

Correct me if im wrong but does that mean that students who apply for law ( just say that the course is 485 points)...stand more chance of getting a place due to lack of applicants if they only receive the 485 points than those who apply for arts( lets say 400) and they receive 400 points????

Well I think TCD actually has the highest points for Arts courses (by far, by like 100+ points in certain cases), it's just not done by the omnibus entry system utilised in other Irish colleges.

Stevo, I think if you get 485, and the points happen to be 485, you would most likely be fine. Only courses like Medicine or Dentistry, which are generally massively over subscribed typically end up x number of points* and have to be decided by lottery. I have never seen Law end up being decided in that manner. In any case, there is often a second round of offers in Law, so even if you weren't offered a place initially, you may still get in, so to speak.
