    Hi all

Going to be travelling from Dublin to Galway and back week after next and I was wondering if it was worth purchasing the premier seat verus the standard? I have heard if it is on the old type trains that there is literally no difference - is the dublin to galway train the new version?

I don't mind shelling out the extra if there really is a difference in comfort / extra amenities etc

    Cheers

There's no difference in comfort - exactly the same seats.

What do you pay the extra for?

Premier on a MK4 makes no difference to the thing rocking from side to side. :pac:

    No "old" trains anymore.

IMO its a waste of money for the premier seat.

It's only Dublin-Cork has Mk4s though is it not, and Dublin-Galway are 22Ks.

As regards there being "no difference" on 22Ks, admittedly I know some people who would pay extra to sit in a carriage only with those who have paid extra (i.e. to avoid having to travel with students or "commoners"). Given the types you get on the train sometimes, this possibly makes sense if you have plenty of money (and still plenty of people would prefer the train to a long car journey or hassle at airports). However I am not at all sure Iarnród Éireann actually police the first class sections?

I took the train from Euston to Holyhead pre BR breakup. The train was packed and we were given the option of a bump up to 1st class for an extra £2. You should have seen the look on some of those that paid the full rate. In the UK they still take it serious if you take a 1st class seat on a standard fare.

I don't know what trains they are exactly, but the last time I went to Galway I was on one of the "new" trains, and could not find a 1st class section. Or any "restricted" section. Everybody sat wherever they wanted, whatever price they paid.

    No difference except:
    1) You have some peace and quiet away from the rest of the train where you can sit/work in peace!
    2) If it is the 1630 Dublin/Galway or 0705 Galway/Dublin there is at-seat catering

    That's about it really.

not really worth the huge prices being asked for the choice to pay for a warm buffet lunch brought to your seat and there is no guarantee that a hen or stag party have not splashed out on the premier service so it may not even be quiet!

I actually will be getting the 1630 Dublin/Galway but not interested in eating the food, guess it's normal seats for me!

I have noticed the first class section on Dublin-Belfast Enterprise Service with better/wider seats, and someone standing at the door to let you in etc. Anyone know what's the difference in price of those tickets compared to the normal? Also is it possible to get TaxSaver commuter tickets for the first class (Dub-Drogheda) area? (I would think it's pretty expensive to keep riff raff like me away)

PS: OP, apologies for slightly hijacking your thread...!

I don't think there is a first class annual ticket. However, you can get upgrades - I'm not sure what the prices are.

Victor you are indeed correct - no annual first class ticket exists.

Passengers holding annual tickets have to pay the individual supplement for each journey.

Nothing is ever going to beat the look on the train manager's face on the Enterprise when myself and a friend turned up as 'scruffy teenagers' in rugby shirts with First Plus tickets :D Doubt attitudes of the train staff / regulars in First have changed in the years since then though.
