Saw this on the skysports website this morning..

honestly, some journalists should be barred with the utter sh1te they come out with.......so who boils your blood !

Amongst the questions he fielded, the 34-year-old was asked by one journalist whether his off-course misdeamours had been worthwhile given his recent poor form and his current familial predicament.

What do you expect when most journalists out there think they are writing for The Sun. The main objective is to get the most shocking words out of Tiger to try and sell a few more copies of their rag.

Well he was playing a lot better when he was getting away with his off-course adventures. Maybe he was onto something.

I found it embarrasing that two of the daftest questions during that press conference were asked by Irish journalists.I mean, everything he's going to say about his personal issues has already been said, and he was good enough to come over here to support the pro am.The event raised far more than it would have simply by having Tiger involved, so they should have left those questions alone out of common courtesy.Although one Irish journalist, in fairness to him, said something along those lines and thanked him for coming. Then you had that eeeeejit who asked him if any of the Irish 'gave him a run for his money'.Cringeworthy.There was clearly many there who hadn't a clue about Golf. Why they let anyone other than Sports writers into those conferences I'll never know. It's not as if they're under any obligation to let the likes of a tabloid in there.

That was a Star reporter I think. They have a proud piece on the front page today about asking the question nobody else dared to ask

You've made some fair points there Biffo.

Yes I agree that it was decent of Tiger to come over to support JP.

Yes, I agree that it is cringeworthy when some graduate of the 'Lorraine Keane-Expose-TV3-whataretheywearinginhollywood' school of journalism asks the most idiotic questions......

but....I must take issue when you say

"Why they let anyone other than Sports writers into those conferences I'll never know. It's not as if they're under any obligation to let the likes of a tabloid in there."

    It's called freedom of Press.

Much as we may be embarrassed by seemingly idiotic or seemingly insensitive questions at press conferences it's very important that no-one is excluded from asking whatever they want to ask. Anything else is just another form of censorship.

Now, I am a fan of Tiger Woods the golfer. He's the best that has ever played the game IMO.

However, I get really pissed off with his White House style of press conference management and very often it is his responses that are cringeworthy. Just click on the link below for the lorryload of shyyyyyttte that he spewed forth last February to a specially selected so-called 'Press Conference' made up mainly of family and several friends. No one was allowed to ask questions and it was stage managed to the hilt.

    http://www.usmagazine.com/celebritynews/news/watch-tiger-woods-press-conference-live-2010192

Frequently he selects who will or will not be invited to a press conference and to me that is unacceptable. I don't see any other player behaving that way towards the press even though they too have been asked about their infidelities, illness, why they sacked caddies, etc. They just man up and answer the questions until the matter goes to ground.

If we get to the point where the press are afraid to ask questions (however inane they may be) of Tiger, Brian Cowan, Barack Obama and anyone else who courts fame then I think we only deserve the lies that they willl spew forth.

And there have been plenty of those from Tiger.

They're entitled to ask whatever they want. Whether he thinks his personal escapades have affected his game or his sponsorship or his fan base are very valid questions. Tough sh!t to Tiger if the questions hit a nerve. Besides, the guy was being a complete dick. He was clearly put out by having to attend even though it was voluntary. Apparently, he still believes he has an image to maintain.

Why do you think he didn't want to be there? He looked like he was enjoying himself with Tony McCoy and company yesterday, and he's good friends with JP himself. He's been to it 3 times now and had every excuse and plenty of chances to pull out of it this year, yet he still came.Plenty of others pulled out, short-notice.If he didn't want to come, he wouldn't have, simple as that. Also, he's (probably) going through a divorce at the moment, not to mention he's playing fairly poorly, with some of his worst results in years. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone smiling and laughing through those circumstances.

As for the questions he was asked, I understand that they're free to ask what they want. But I have to wonder what's the point?Everyone knows he won't answer them anyway, beyond what he's already told reporters in the States. All it served to do was annoy him, make themselves look like fools and put a negative blotch on what was a great event.I'm no Tiger apologist, what he did was wrong, but to ask him questions like that at a laid back, relaxed event like the Pro Am was a bit strange I thought. But sure if it sold a few papers today they got what they wanted.

Good column by Tony McCoy about his round with Tiger, sounds like he did enjoy himself :

I heard the questions being asked and it was in a sporting context. He's on poor form for a reason and to ask him questions about the source of his problem is very valid. This golf political correctness, sssh don't mention the affairs is load of baloney. If he wants it to go away he'll need to improve his game so its no longer an issue.

OK maybe his bad mood was simply due to his poor form and annoyance at the press. Lets not forget he sued the Irish press so I can understand why he might be short with them. But as I say, tough tits Tiger the Irish press has the right to ask whatever they want. He may get away with his censorship in the states but not here. Lets not forget this is his first trip to Europe, he's in for more of it at St Andrews unless he improves his game and gives them something positive to focus on.

Heard it. Just about the dumbest fúcking question i have ever heard asked at a press conference, "was it all worth it".

Ten years of non-stop no strings shagging in return for 3 months of average golf (in which he's earned how much in prize money?). Yep, i bet that (most likely)bra burning feminist from the Star really made Woods feel pretty humbled.

Yep, a huge moral victory for the freedom of the press brigade.
I'd actually understand it more if he were competing in a tour event, but to hassle a guy with nonsensical questions like that when he has made a huge effort to support a charity event is just beyond me.
... And i dont even like tiger woods.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 877 ✭✭✭blackwaterfish

the press/media here or in uk cant be expected to exhibit any kind of moral or ethical dignity when confronted with such an easy target as woods... the crass manner in which used a charitable event was entirely predictable. once again they proved they are the driving force in this tabloid driven trash culture that is prevalent now. ive given up buying newpapers both broadsheet and redtop... and even watching the bloody news. its bbc news . com for me.
so while i do feel somewhat sorry for woods that he was confronted with such an utterly deplorable line of questioning ultimately he's brought about his own downfall and sadly a brilliant charitable event like adare was sullied in the end by these reeking tabloid turd vendors. tigers presence obviously gave the event huge profile but, like flies to sh1te, they followed the rancid odour of tabloid sensationalism to adare.

if your going to blame anyone blame the origin of the stink!

That dozy bint Glenda Gilson was hugely embarassing with her numbskull questions. I agree that Tiger is open to questioning but there is a time and a place. This was a charity event which he had put a huge effort in just to get there. Hitting him with cheap questions just smacked of a basic lack of manners for the effort he had put in to get here. He has covered all that stuff about his private life at this stage.

This is so bad. What was she on about with the "run for your money" question? And what about the blank when Kyle "McLoughlin" told her he was playing with Sandy Lyle.......

I haven't much time for Tiger but fair dues for showing up.

This is the flop shot that AP McCoy mentions in the article above. It was on the 5th.

Nice video.I was struggling to see what was going on at that green. Was standing at the 1st green at 8 yesterday morning and watched his approach shot coming in.It was one of those moments where you know you've seen something you could never do yourself. From under a tree in the rough, a huge ballooning fade that stopped almost dead 10 or 12 feet from the hole.I'm sure most pros out there could have done it, but the swing looked so smooth, the ball went so high and the way it stopped was very impressive to me.

On another note, this article from the New York Times sums up well what was wrong with asking the questions that were asked in the press conference.
