Don't put your timing chip band on too tightly

A little warning folks from personal experience.
In Athlone on sunday I was aware of a niggly pain on my ankle where my timing chip was on, during the run, but only noticed when I got home that it had cut well into the back of my ankle due to being on too tight.
Now, infected. My foot is like a big red hot balloon and I'm on an antibiotic for next 7 days.
    Stupid avoidable injury.

So don't put your chip band on too tight, folks.

same happened me. I noticed it getting a little infected so have smothered it with anti septic for the last few days. I think they were really crap quality bands.

Definitely going to buy my own. Mine irritated me the whole race in Athlone and looked liked it had never been cleaned or sterilised after the last (several ?) users. Ugh!
    Hope you all heal soon.

The chip cut my ankle in Athlone too, all the way around the ankle.

Thankfully it didn't get infected, I can put up with a little discomfort but not infection.
    Hope you get better soon.

Thanks for the tip HM, yet another item to purchase now.

Kruger hope that clears up soon for ya .. nasty!

I put mine on too tight also and have a cut from it, thankfully clean and not infected though.

Having crashed on the bike I got all the resultant cuts and grazes cleaned and dressed by the order of Malta (thanks guys:D) but didnt notice the other ankle til on the way home.
All the cuts are now fine from a crash at close to 50km/h.
The gentle rubbing of the timing band gets me an infection!

Should have binned the run after the bike crash.

Silly question here, I've never run a chipped race, does it have to go on the ankle? And if so why? Can you wear it on your wrist.

For running races, the chip is worn on your shoe laces or at the back of your race number so you don't have the problems mentioned in this thread.

The athlone race spoken about is a triathlon; since wearing your shoes or number in the water is not an option the chip has to be tied to your ankle or wrist I guess (never done a triathlon myself).

Thats strange - the same thing happened me in Athlone last year ( I didn't do it this year) - it's never happened me anywhere else though - could it be the particular one's they use in Athlone are more prone to cutting your ankle?

Yea I'd say so, it was pretty much just a bit of velcro with no padding at all.

Was talking to a few at the Duathlon in Phoenix Park tonight and their ankles look like they'd been tortured!

The one's used tonight were very comfortable, didn't even notice it.

Silly Q, but if you buy your own, how does it work with each race organiser's system? Would your own chip work with all systems?

This did not happen to me, thank God - but I feel left out now!!!:D

    Get well soon guys.

you can buy a personal championchip (some races give them as prizes) and that should work with any race that uses championchip timing so long as you register the number of your chip with the organisers. However there are a number of systems out there e.g. redtag (who post here sometimes) is a very popular one in ireland. The red tags chips are different but luckily already come with the neoprene "comfy" band so no issues there.
