Tipping Trailer - Hydraulic Problem

I have a manually operated (pump and go!) hydraulic builder's trailer.

I'm painting it at the moment and until today the trailer tipped fine.

There was some fluid leaking from the release valve but I replaced the o ring.

I took off the rails to paint them seperately and when I let down the trailer it stopped about 4" from its cradle. I presumed it was the lack of weight from the side rails/tail board.

Anyways ... tonight I went to raise it .... it will pump and raise the bed of the tailer but once I stop pumping it will slowly start coming down again until it stops about 4" from its bed.

I thought it might be low on fluid so I filled some into the top of the resevoir ... no good .. it even spewed fuild out there until I took some fluid out.

The hydraulic ram itself has fluid coming out when I pump the handle.

What can I do to sort this?

I'd say it's down to the release valve...check the o-ring is in place!

    I'll check it this evening.

The funny thing is that the o ring was missing out of it for awhile and apart from a little leak when releasing it worked fine.

I'll be back with an update later!

    Thanks pajero12

You were spot on pajero 12!

    It was the o-ring.

Even though it was an exact match to the one it replaced it was stopping the release valve from closing fully.

I took it out, it worked.

    Thanks!
