What happens to insurance policy after a claim?

I paid my insurance last October for the year but my car was stolen a month later, they paid up on the claim in December.

I only just got a replacement car tonight, so my question is can I just ring up tomorrow and add new car to my policy (which should expire at the end of October) or is/was the policy 'cancelled' once I made my claim? I didn't receive any notification to that effect (or refund on remainder of policy) so just wondering what I should expect when I call them up tomorrow, thanks!

I'd imagine you still have an insurance policy. You paid for a years insurance last October so that should be still valid until this October.

I had this with FBD a couple of years ago, I was amazed to find that they had maintained comprehensive cover on a car which they had written off, paid out on, and taken ownership of the salvage on. They did this on the basis that I had not informed them that I was no longer driving the vehicle in question. They were very sticky about it, I hope it doesn't happen to you.

Yep, apparently even though they knew my Golf was stolen, they thought I'd like to stay insured on it for the year anyway! As my policy is not up until the end of September they let me add my new car onto it, it is the same value and engine size as the last car but I still had to pay money to 'add car mid-policy'.

Dreading getting renewal quotes now that I don't have a no claims bonus, doesn't seem fair as the car was stolen, but guess I should have gotten a protected no claims in my policy

Some ins cos don't count fire/theft as claims for the purposes of NCB, you might be lucky yet.
