It's all down to how it was cared for and the kind of use it got.

theres 104k on my little 1.8 petrol 10 year old S3 and it still keeps up with traffic :D

as above, its all down to how the car was treated. buy a car on condition and history, not on mileage imo.

I bought a car from there before, nice chaps.

Once theres FSH it should be less of a worry - however are you planning on selling the car agin in a few years? If so the resale value will be lower due to the higher mileage.

you know what I mean though.

I've had many diesels down the years they can hit 200k plus easily, essentially lorry engines if you know what I mean.

As for petrol I thought they gave trouble bout the 100k mark. I know it depends how they've been looked after but buyin second hand sure how would ya know other than the service history.
that doesnt show how the driver treated it between services:rolleyes:

Driving it and having a good look around it will tell you a lot about how it's been treated. Try to drive a very good, low mileage example first to use as a reference point.

Alfa 156 with 93k on a 1.6 petrol and it is sweeter than ever.

    It's all about maintenance.

My Corolla has just been serviced with 120K miles on it today. It's like new according to the mechanic and barely run in so much so when he heard I'd be selling it in the coming months he got more interested in it

Those engines are supercharged so I would be concerned at the durability of the supercharger at that mileage. Potential for a large nasty bill.

Also while the engine may wear the mileage fine you have to remember that the other components in the car could be coming to the end of their natural life. Suspension, clutch, possibly gearbox are other major components that could wipe out the bargin price. Early models of that model were also plagued by electrical problems.

Eugh - I didnt notice it was manual

Run to the hills op - a manual merc is a BIG no no. Autoboxes is where its at.

My mistake, it is definately an auto despite the description saying manual.

Had an '87 Opel Ascona 2.0i years ago.

    Well serviced
Driven on but never raced or rallied..
236,000 miles on it when I sold it and never burned a drop of oil.
Had no problem reading 125 plus on the clock either when needed :D

It should be ok in my opinion most cars will reach the 150k mark well before having any major problems. With maintanence obviously.

We have a 530i with 160k miles on it. Will put it up for sale soonish, but the engine seems fine. Transmission, O2 sensors, MAF etc were all changed, but the core block, 100%. And I wouldnt expect any less from a 3litre BMW.

I think that nowdays with so complicated diesel engines, the best bet to gain high milage is to use petrol car, specially larger one like 2l.

I have a 135k miles driven Volvo s40 and I cannot see any reason why I could not get at least double miles out of it.
