I recently graduated with a degree in English. I would like to look into becoming a tutor in the adult education sector but I don't know where to look. I have emailed the appropriate people in my local VEC regarding information on volunteering and courses on tutoring but have not yet heard back from them. The only real information I can seem to find is on NALA.ie, but surely there is more?

I would be very appreciative if someone could point me in the right direction as I seem to be hitting a brick wall!!

Call into your local Adult Education centre and speak to someone.

You will need to enrol in an Adult Education Tutoring course. They are run by all local VEC's and usually start in September. My one ran for 10 weeks (one night per week) while other can run for five weeks (2 nights per week). Everyone needs to complete this fully before they can become a tutor.

This is a list for my local area, there should be a similar page for your local area.

If your area is anything like mine then you will have to 'fight' to get on the course as there will be way more applicants than places. Well worth doing however. At the interview stage they will not be all that interested in your degree, more about the person and how well they may be as an adult tutor.
You do not need a degree in anything to teach adult literacy, more an empathy with and an understanding of what's involved.
A read of some of the literature on the NALA site would be worth your while.
"Guidelines for Good Adult Literacy Work" would be a good one to start with.

And as noted courses tend to start in Sept. so you have a head start :-)
    HTH.
