I was like that, I was so scared, to the point that I was sick but I forced myself to go, if you want to pm me, I can give you the name of a place that I went to and after I came out of there, I feel confident in going back which is unheard of for me!

Paul, you are not allowed to name dentists anymore, you have to only do it via pm :(

Look up the golden pages, many Dentists now offer sedation for particularly nervous patients. Hopefully u won't need this. Ring up for appointment, and tell the receptionist u are nervous. I have horrific memories of my family dentist when I was younger, thought they were all butchers, until he retired! My current dentist explains everything he is about to do, putting me totally at ease. Even if I am in pain, I can't wait to get into that chair cos I know I'll be walking out numb but painfree! Look after your teeth, untreated infections and gum disease can lead to heart disease and diabetes.

    Hi angel

there is a thread for nervous patients, have a look at that. Dentistry and dentists have changed and improved over the years. Thankfully the days of a knee on your chest are behind us.

IF you can get a dentist recommended by a friend or by PM on the boards you will find out it is not so bad. Sally is right, do not leave things to get even worse.

    Best of luck

No one likes the dentist but they are your friend; a little discomfort now will most likely save you massive pain down the line. I mean, if your teeth are in need of treatment, they're not going to repair themselves. Best to get in there and let them help you, hard as it maybe. I suddenly find myself thinking of that scene from Cast Away where Hanks is trying to take out his tooth with an ice-skate.

If you think about fear, we always tend to imagine the worst case when statistically it never is that bad. If you think back to all the times (as many as you can) that you were afraid of an outcome, and then remember what actually happened, I would hazard a guess and say your imagined outcome never turned out as bad as you imagined it. We tend to over-estimate the chances of misfortune, pain, embarressment, etc but it's just a quirk in the brain.

I heard somewhere that dentists are more likely to suffer from depression and alcoholism because they are disliked by many people. No idea if it's true or just a bit of random trivia.
