Things have changed, I once had an NCT fail for a missing seal on the petrol cap.
I replaced it with a new replacement cap.I doubt if the temporary plastic ones you get in petrol stations would do.

how can you not have a petrol cap?

    Think of the risk/contamination!

Do yourself a favour - get one ASAP from a scrapyard and dont just borrow one for the retest

I have had one of those replacement ones from the petrol station on my car through the last 2 NCT's with no problem, last NCT done in Feb this year.

The fact the op says "a full proper one" I take to mean they have one of those cheap green generic ones which some testers do not allow pass.

There isn't anything dangerous about them so hence if he does a quick swap for a couple of days and carry on with the old one there shouldn't be a problem.

If he doesn't have one at all then yes get one.

EDIT: After re-reading it I think I read it wrongly originally

A properly fitting patrol tank cap will give you better fuel economy and better emissions.

You can go to Halfords or Motor Factors to get one for your car.
