Hey peeps. I'm new to this so please forgive me if i'm in the wrong place, and i did post this on the Arts page, so again forgive me, and it took me 10 minutes to find it..... Gosh being a board virgin is tiring. Anyway/......

I want to set up an indoor market type business on private property in a town. What rules and laws am i governed by, if any? I know i'll probably have to get insurance, and same will have to be provided by potential stall holders, but are there any regulations with regard to the council given the fact that it is on private property.

they have sprung up everywhere. Dublin Markets especially popular - some are 'farmers markets, some are car boot sales and some are 'different' (check out the Newmarket square market)

You'd want to make sure that 1 you have the footfall, publicity organised and a decent amount of stallholders to make it viable.

You will need insurance alright and make sure that each individual stall holder has their own insurance too.

You will need to check with your local council too - you might need to change the 'use' of the property depending on where you intend to hold it. You will also have to indemnify the landlord if the land / building is not yours.

Some useful info on markets here

Cheers guys. Its fairly difficult to get any solid answer on what i'm looking for. The last thing i want is the Rev on my back. But i want to keep the red tape and the bankers away! They've gotten us into too much crap and i don't want to be part of that!

A few years ago I worked for about 2 years in a market and anyone I talked to there never had insurance...

I've yet to see a 'proper' market that doesn't insist on insurance. Local council's will not issue a casual trading licence (where required) unless you have insurance.
