There is a reply in a thread here from Curry's stating that it will be available in August. I was in PC World on Saturday and spoke to the HP rep that was there. He is getting info on prices, spec and release date for me.

I'll post an update when I hear from him.

Watch out it will be the "UK version"

We get the 1366 x 768 screen and not the full HD 1600x900screen like across the water. Plus ~25% price increase. Also note that the 5650 GPU is underclocked by HP, so if you are a gamer this should be a major turning off point here.

TBH not worth it if you dont get the screen, which was by far the major selling point.
Id look at the Acer 4820GT (+Battery life and GPU) or Asus N82(+USB 3) for much cheaper but better alternatives at that screen resolution.

Hate how we always get the second rate specs ... seriously considering ordering a 3820GT from taiwan just go i can get the 5650 and i5-540 over the poor UK specs at a cheaper price!!!

The Acer 4820GT is getting very poor reviews for the keyboard (even on the fan forums the best they say is 'you get used to it'). Which for me is essential as I'll be writing a lot on it in the next few years.

oh and if you want the US version I did see this online.

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/HP-Envy-14-Configure-Order-up-i7-qm-8GB-750GB-/290453488792?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item43a0608498

Not sure if it's legit though so at your own risk.

    I got my HP envy 15 with 4gb ram, 4830 HD, 320gb 7200rpm.

    All for 1100 in Ireland.

The Hp envy 15 has nothing on the 14 I think. It's also exactly what I'm looking for. I'm thinking about trying to get a family member in teh US to try pick it up for me.

Exactly what I'm looking for also :) Hopefully I'll get a family member to get this for me in New York in October. I'll have a look also when I'm in Asia next month

HP Envy 14 is now listed on the irish HP website, buy thru retailer only, no price but it seems only the BrightView Option :(

PC World had the Envy 13 & 15 the last time I was in the store in Carrickmines. Click also has it listed on their site a few months back.

The envy 15 and 13 both had a couple of design flaws that hp have tried addressing in the new envy 14 such as heating and battery life issues

While the 14 is being released at a lower price compared to the 15 at release time, it is the better machine

Also comes with a dvd drive which the 15 didn't which you may like

On another note, I've been emailing the irish HP store website and strangely they don't seem to have any idea as to when the 14 is going to be hitting their site? strange..

cool, been doing my reading and your right about the 14 being superior to the 15.
as for the power of these, anyone have any idea if the specs in these machines are up to scratch for fairly heavy 3d modeling and rendering?(softimage/3dsmax/zbrush.)

theyd be able for it alright but you might want a laptop with an i7 for faster rendering, the irish models are coming with i5's

    ahh i see.
thanks for the reply, ill look into other machines with similar price range.

Just to update. I found the Radiance screen on a german site (cyberport.de) and I have ordered it. It's 1300 to get it sent to Ireland and everything and they have apparantly 2-3day delivery and have the item in stock.

So I'll update you on that when I get it.

If you get the i7 you inevitably will compromise slightly with battery life so it's really up to you (opentarget) to decide what's most important.

Power over portability for me, i need a cheap desktop workstation replacement...and my budget dosnt stretch far enough for an actual mobile workstation so im looking in this general price range, 1200 to 1500 give or take on ether end of that scale.
if anyone has other recommendations other than the envy im all ears.

Well there are loads of laptops that have good processors but are heavy.

    http://search.laptopsdirect.co.uk/nav/184/corei5/184/corei7/186/gaminggraphics/type/laptops/0?format=184

I was really specific about wanting a light laptop to bring around and good battery without really compromising on performance (the hp envy 14) so that's why I wanted that. You may be better looking at heavier laptops with similar or better spec for less money.

The hp pavilions are pretty decent too they're just way too heavy for my needs.

    This samsung is nice too:

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/review/2010/04/13/Samsung-R780---17-3in-Laptop/p4

I would have gotten that but it's just again a tiny bit too heavy.

I was considering getting the german model but the keyboard and hassle of sorting out the OS put me off, going to pick one up in the US sometime soon

thanks for the links Eebs, im also looking at the sony vaio f12 range, they are in a similar class to the envy and similar price range, they also come with a nvidia gt 330 which as far as i know is less powerful than the ati chip in the envy but dose support cuda processing which is really nice for graphics card based rendering. ahhh the decisions!
can anyone comment on the build quality of the vaio range? i ask this because i have managed to burn out my ps3 in the past....

I love the build quality of the vaios. I've had two. I even dropped one down the stairs and it was fine.

I'm just going to put stickers over the keyboard. It'll be grand.
