Speakers not being detected by my computer

I recently had my parents' computer repaired by a shockingly incompetent repairman. My hard-drive was fecked so I bought a new one and wanted him to install it and put all the old gear on the new drive. When he finally fixed the problem he gave it back to me and no there is no audio.

When I turn on i-tunes the following message appears:
itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/video playback may not operate properly.

I've followed the instructions of this link http://learnwithharv.com/blog/itunes-has-detected-a-problem-with-your-audio-configuration/
but both the "windows audio" and "windows management" services are showing the "started" status.

Any ideas how I can sort this out? The speakers themselves are fine and I've had them for years.

Have you tried playing sounds through other software e.g Windows Media Player, and have you tried playing a CD? Might just be a setting in iTunes you need to fix if the sound plays in other software.

Sounds like missing drivers perhaps. Pretty common after someone reformats a drive. Check the device manager to see if they were reinstalled properly. If not well you may need to invest in driverdoctor or similar.

Right click on My Computer and click Properties. Go to the Hardware tab and then click on Device Manager. Should be a choice for Sound controllers. If you have anything with a yellow question mark against it, I'd search for the drivers to reinstall. (www.driverguide.com is usually good. Failing that Device Doctor searches for updates for drivers online).
