Legality of running public events in a private club?

By club I don't mean a nightclub, I mean a private club like they have with boating clubs around the country. Is it possible to run music events and art exhibitions etc and to charge the public into it? Functionally, there would be little difference between it and a nightclub (except for selling alcohol) so I'm uncertain.
