Would students be happy with a McDonalds franchise on campus and do you think it'd be well supported? We are planning to lobby the incoming Student's Union this year to make it happen so just thought i'd gauge students opinion on here.

God I hate that University so much! Who gives a f**k about a McDonalds for students. That Uni is nothing but a drain on tax payers. I get the necessity of it and that the parents of said students pump money into the local economy but the students and fat cats in that place just don't have any real world perspective. Instead of pumping millions into a pile of crap sports hall maybe put into something useful for the community like towards the hospitals that the nurses train in...sorry rant over /

Our proposal would involve the McDonald's being privately owned and therefore would not be a drain on the taxpayer rather it would increase the coffers of both the University and Students Union. I think the new Kingfisher sport's hall is brilliant and very well run.

I understand that, I would assume the McDonalds would be privately owned but in time when any other types of organizations are concerned with cutting costs I find it pretty ironic that you guys are lobbying to get a McDonalds on campus. Its a different world over there and in the mean while I'm paying very high taxes part of which is going towards that university The Gym is well run but it looks like an old sock inside already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭WesternZulu

The Gym is fine and was badly needed in the university.

As for a McDonalds, i wouldn't personally like to see it (corporate machine and all that ) and it would take more than a petition to get one too.

    Where would it go??
There is no need for another place to eat in the college, there already is the bialann, the college bar, subway, friars, the hub, moffets and smokies.

Then you have the places right beside the college like wards, centra/gnl, topaz and even a supermacs right across from the hospital if you're in the mood for fast food.

It won't happen for no other reason than because there it no need for it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,924 ✭✭✭✭RolandIRL

agree with WesternZulu, there's no need for one. there's plenty of options available to go for fast food. i'd sooner go to SuperMacs than McDonalds, especially since supermac's is irish.
doubt the college or SU would even want a fast-food chain on campus taking away from the bialann, or the college bar.

if you want a mcdonalds, there's one on shop street 10 mins walk away.

I have changed my stance if it would make students unhappy then I support it! Hoorah for McDonalds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,387 ✭✭✭franglan

Simple question- why do you want a McDonalds on campus? You would be better off lobbying for cheaper food from the restaurants on campus or even for the student union to run the Bialann themselves or even to try and make the kingfisher introduce cheaper rates for students or even make it available to non-members more than just very early in the morning, late evening and an hour or two in the afternoon when we all have lectures. Focus your lobbying on these issues lads, not on fast food thanks!

Uh, this sounds like trolling, to me.

Mcdonalds on campus will never happen - and if by some small chance this thread is actually serious, students would not be happy with a mcdonalds on campus, and I can't imagine it would be supported.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,419 ✭✭✭tommy21

I think it would be a disgrace and extremely irresponsible, just another nail in the obesity coffin. Who is "we" that are planning on doing the lobbying?

I agree, I find the motivation behind the OP's question most bizarre.

OP, are you part of some lobby group acting on behalf of commercial interests?

I'm holding back here from going on a political rant because of the OP's username. But politics and burgers where's the connection?

Me no have real world perspective? That's unpossible.

You sound miserable, so I won't even dignify your post with a good response, troll.

NUIG_FiannaFail, you've lost respect from people on these forums before. I also don't believe you are who you say you are. Go away.

Very simple - their biggest selling items are

    1) Twisty lies
    2) Hamburgulars with plenty of stitchup on them
    3) Macworries
    4) They have a few greens on offer too just to brighten up their credentials

OP is using FF in username to get people to bad mouth them for sake of argument. s/he wants you to go on a rant and s/he has posted threads to rile people up before. s/he's just back from a one-month ban and is looking for people to give into ranting.

    for example, *cough* here *cough*

Textbook troll. Ignore him and he'll go away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,387 ✭✭✭franglan

It was a poor proposal to start with, to be honest OP.

Very simple. We in the Cumann feel that students can never have a wide enough variety of food on campus and allowing someone to set-up a McDonalds will bring in much needed revenue to both the University and Students Union through the rent/sale of the property premises. BizSoc committee members have also indicated they are willing to help push on this issue as it will create employment on campus along with encouraging a native galwegian to take out the franchise thereby fostering entrepreneurship (which we need a lot more of to kickstart the economy to be honest!). A lot of my friends seem to be favour of McDonalds coming however maybe the reaction on here is simple petty hostility to the great political party i represent  either way I would encourage everyone to have a open mind to the possibility and write to our own Emmet Connolly and Peter Mannion in the Student Union to encourage them to make it happen. I can't see any downside and if McDonalds get in then hopefully we can get the likes of KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King to follow.

that just would not be commercially viable and is wishful thinking on your part.

Do you really think Fianna Fáil are doing such a good job that you have to make a fake account to try to make them look bad? That's pathetic, mate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,095 ✭✭✭Columc

    1) Hope to god this wont happen, Already hate going to bialann cause of the subway smell

    2) If you look through all of OP posts, he in someway tries and trolls, its a dedicated troll account, Can we not just perma bann it? or just say who his other username is.

    3) He seems a bit sour towards the NUIG SU electiions, thats when his account was created, prob a running person who got a poor amount of votes and now seems like he is still sour and wants to try and annoy the current SU as much as possible this year?

    That's funny.

Very simple. We in the Cumann feel...
Are you representing the NUIG Ogra FF cumann (Cumann de Barra) then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭RichCRX

What a way not to think out a proposal.

    Questions;

Where ya gonna put all these mighty franchises?there berely room for parking sure.

Why not at least support an irish owned franchise business such as supermacs....at least the money stays in our economy?

Is the outlet gonna be job friendly to students?Cause looking at the other food establishments around NUIG...i don't think it will.

Why do we need more fatty food outlets?surely health, fitness and appropriate eating at the college age is a big neccessity in order to combat obesiety.Perhaps lobby for free, learn how to cook healthy classes.

Isn't there already plenty of choice on campus as already mentioned?

Isnt there a McDonalds a 10 minute walk from college?why not eat and work it off with the walk then

Why not concentrate on lobbying for bringing food prices down around college, especially in the "supposedly" subsidizes bialann?

Sure you'l get alot of support from students because as soon as they hear "McDonalds" theyre already sold.A very poor thing to lobby on thats not really viable and has been poorly thought out by your group.

I think the kingfisher is excellent.

P.S. why are you in the NUIG forum if you hate it?

Closed premturely while tired and skimming.
Re-opening to allow Wompa1 to respond, but that post could be more broadly interpreted as constructive criticism rather than hate.

I have only seen the sports hall from the Quincentenial Bridge.

Cool. A thread re-opened just for me to give a non-exciting answer. I saw McDonalds franchise on Campus come up on the home page and thought what a-hole college is thinking of doing that. Then clicked in and saw it was in my own humble little town. So that's why I was on the NUIG forum. I don't come to this forum, I think not since the little faction of students went on the war path on the Galway City forum and someone linked to this forum and NUI's own forum site when O'Cuív got into it with some a-hole.

A McDonalds on campus will never work.

The cost of setting up and buying a McD's franchise could not make business sense and would never make money.

New age students are a little too snobby for McDonalds these days. Its not cool to like franchise fast food chains unless its Supermacs and even then that's a little too boggerish

Dang Students and I'm no hypocrite, I was a student and I hate students then too. Being one was an necessary evil

Cook your own food, pack sandwiches, skin cats in increasingly creative designs.
