    Hi there,

Looking for recommendation please on a 2nd hand car to buy. I've been a solid company car ford focus man for the last 8 years and now circumstances change. A few parameters.

    - Focus works fine for me and might still go for one, but might be time for a change. (My Dad was a serial Cortina-man, maturing to Sierras and Mondeo and the writing is on the wall that I am turning into my Dad)

-Budget not prime factor, but from initial research there seems to be nice cars around 6-7k mark and I don't care about age so long as it will be pretty reliable.

-Car for fiancee and myself and she has to learn how to drive properly, do test etc. She is 5' 2" and I'm 6' 2", so we need something to suit both

    - No family at the minute, but planning on it in the near future so need to think of buggies / car seats and all the paraphanelia

    - We're averaging only around 15,000 km per year

    - I'm mid 30's so hopefully engine size v insurance won't be a driving factor - although I'd hope to get something pretty efficient. I presume diesel (ideally turbo) is the way to go?

    - I might end up doing a bit of a renovation so may need something to get me to the builders providers more often than to the National concert hall. (Incidentially, you can get a wheelbarrow into a ford focus in case the subject ever comes up in the pub)

    - I already have an old porsche 911, which I've parked up somewhere nice and dry and sort of forgotton about it, so I don't need a licence to thrill. That said I'd love to get something like a 230 Merc or better still a Jaguar XK8 but can't really justify it to myself and hence can't really try and convince financee that this is best car for 'us'.

    - I will need a car for my work, won't have huge mileage. Fiancee does not really need car but needs something to learn on so it might be overkill to get 2 cars at the moment. We live in Dublin city

    - At the minute, thinking along the lines of 2000 - 2004 vintage, maybe Audi, 220 merc or 5-series BMW. Really should I just knock all this on the head and get a ford or if I fancy a change get a Toyota?

Would love to hear some of the hard-earned wisdom on offer from boards. Thanks,
    Chase
