3D TV. The near future or a short lived gimmick?

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on 3DTV.

Having tried a few different sets of both Passive and Active flavours, I can state that I am utterly unconvinced by it.

    - There's not much content out there atm.
    - The majority of TV and Movies gain nothing from 3D anyways.
    - The Glasses are annoying, and slightly nauseating, I wouldn't fancy wearing them all day, though maybe you'd get used to them.
    - The Glasses cost a fortune and I have 3 kids under the age of 6 to break them.
    - UPC has feck all HD content yet, and their combined TV, BB and Phone package is unbeatable, so I am stuck with them, and I can't see them transmitting anything 3D for a long time.

I am open to having my mind changed as I am in the market for a new TV, and whilst I would like to futureproof myself, I see this current bout of 3DTV going the way of betamax.

It is a complete gimmick, end of.

Most 3D glasses cost upward of 100 euro each, which is not good for a family of 4.
Only a few Blu Rays are coming out in 3D and Sky 3D for the home is still a long way off and peoples opinions of Sky 3D from the pubs is that it just doesn't work for live sport.

3D in the cinema is amazing, but that is where it should stay.
This must be the 3rd or 4th time the industry has tried to re-introduce 3D, more advanced tech is not going to stop it from failing again.

3D gaming will make or break 3D as a home entertainment product

Tried out one of these 3D tvs in Arnotts at the weekend for the first time. It was actually pretty impressive, even though I know it's clearly a gimmick.

The darkness is a problem for me, everything seems to be 20% darker than usual.

I'm also never going to sit wearing the big glasses everytime I want to watch tv. Plus I already wear regular glasses most of the time so that causes another issue!

3D gaming is the only hope for the technology to ever get off the ground,
other than that its another stupid gimmick that will be shoved in our faces for as long as possible in the hope that the general public suffer some sort of cash hemorrhage aimed directly at this annoying system that is lacking in any meaningful media or substance. oh and the €120 glasses are a joke ! rant over :D

I think it will become more mainstream but not going to something thats used that much by people. More TV's will support it but might just be a add-on which will hopefully get cheaper and more standardised

Gimmick. You only have to look at the bandwidth issues to see that there is a problem.

Can only see it taking off if you could view th 3D TV without goggles.

It may be a gimmick for regular tv watching, but for movies and gaming i think there is the potential for 3d to be huge.
The new nintendo 3ds doesnt require 3d glasses and with advances in tv manufacture the day where glasses wont be needed isnt far off (look for tech vids on youtube)

The gaming, movie and porn industry won the bluray over HDDVD battle and the same is gonna happen for 3d.

3D TV is doomed - at least in it's current state with the poxy goggles and all that.

The software and hardware technology is already ripe for single viewer screens like pc's, laptops, mobile phones and handheld games consoles like the forthcoming 3D NDS (or whatever it's called):

It's a beautiful thing; tracks the viewers eyes with the little cam at the front and adjusts the screen accordingly...

and that's where it's going to be at. And why not? Most of the time people watch screens by themselves anyway.

BTW, this chap made an impressive demo of the concept ages ago when the wi first came out - only he used IR signals instead of a face/eye tracking algorithm:

I got to see the 3d panisonic today and I must say bluray 3d is mighty impressive.
Its like the cinema 3d except it is amazingly sharp , Im not sure how well skys system will live up to the awesomness I saw today :)

I was on the fence but now I know I'm definately going to purchase a 3dtv in the next few years.

Indeed it is impressive, but I guess the major flaw is that 95% of TV, Movies etc gains nothing from 3D, and the extra expense, and the awkward glasses etc render it pointless for now. But in a few years, our TVs will be 3D by default, and at the same price point as a HD TV now, so it might get in by the back door, but we'll see.

I felt that samsungs glasses felt the best, but from what ive seen so far

Samsungs Plasma is the best for 3d in my opinion , with sonys 40" led and panisonics plasma about the same in 2nd. I didnt like samsungs leds at all, dont know why, although it could be because the glasses were out of battery lol.

I've got the Samsung 3D Plasma PS63C7000 with Samsung 3D BD player routed through Yamaha RX-V367 running Q acoustics 200 series.

It's the Dogs!! The TV is lighter than my old 42" LCD.

There is sod all disc content out there at the moment but the 3D experience is thrilling.

I've been disappointed however with some films like Coraline that are using blue/red and don't play well at all. I need to do some more research about that.

I hope its pushed. I can't see something that is that awesome fading into the background.
