wax and polish are two different things. polish generally has a cutting compound to remove light scratches dried on stains etc. some also are filler based which hide the swirl marks..
a wax then has no cutting compound it is just a sealer to protect the work of the polish..
try auto glym super resin polish. i find it very good. it can be got in most motor factors usually for under a tenner. follow it up with a coat or two of auto glyms high deffenition wax. this can be expencive at about 70 quid! if thats out of budget get auto glyms extra gloss protection. not as good as a wax but helps protect the finish. i dont work for auto glym or anything. just find most of there products very good and easy to use and source.
there are loads of different ones out there ans some can be got as a dual product or all in one polish and sealer like chemical guys all in one polish but you wont find it on the shelf in many places...
check out detailing world. should be loads of info there..
i would also recomend you use a good clay bar kit before you start polishing.. makes the world of differance

I think this is one of those things where everyone has a brand that they prefer. For me it's anything by Meguiars.

If you're looking to spend a bit of time on it, best thing you can do it start off with a clay bar.

Autoglym Clay Kit would be a good shout. It contains everything you need to safely clay a couple of cars and comes with decent instructions too.

Afterwards, it depends how in-depth you want to go. A pre-wax cleanser such as Dodo Juice Lime Prime Lite will leave a nice smooth surface for good wax to bond to. As for a wax, you could try Meguiar's #16 or Poorboys Blue Nattys Wax. Both will perform well and are suited for darkish paints.

Alternatively, you could go for an 'All in One' polish... such as Dodo Juice Need For Speed. This will polish the surface, but at the same time will leave behind some protection, so waxing isn't absolutely necessary afterwards.

Zymol Carbon for dark colours if you don't mind spending a few quid.

    Alternatively.

    Wash

Polish with Autoglym Super Resin Polish

Wax with Harly Wax > Get it here <<

Harly Wax is very reasonable and is superb on dark colors.
Also very easy to use and holds up well

    Hi

I use autoglym all the time. I have a 01 VW Golf, Black.

The car had all surface scratches. I use the Autoglym Super Resin polish and the Ultra Deep shine. It gives an excellent finish.

I had a few surface abrasions.... shopping trolly marks!, I used the autoglym paint renovator on these, worked a dream.

My other half uses the autoglym HD wax on his new shiney car, too expensive for my banger, but must admit you can see yourself in the paint work, it does excatly what it says on the box.

I've just saw an advert for a new site <snip> they stock all the latest products, seem to be cheaper than the local autofactors.

    @madyoke
Why don't you just own up and state that you have a vested interest in the stated site?

www.cleancar.ie and www.detailer.ie would be two better sites to use IMO. I've only heard good things about them, the site you quote doesn't look the best ;)

If you want to get the best possible finish.

Clay the entire car as the other lads have said,

For a polish I would use any Menzerna polishes. They work really well and are easy enough to use.

After polishing I would use a glaze. It would just fill in any remaining swirl marks and I found it brought up my paint a treat. I used Poor Boys Black Hole.

    Click Me!

Finally for a wax I would use either Meguairs No.16 wax.

    Clicky

Or Poor Boys Natty wax. Ive found that Nattys lasts for slightly longer. i.e Lasts for more washes.

    Click

All of those are nice and cheap and work really well.

I thought I was doing great spending (wasting?) almost 2 hours of Sunday afternoon waxing the car. Now I'm learning about 'Claying' the car first. I'll have to start on Saturday now.....

Bad form, especially considering the state the country is in at the moment, and I'd expect better from a Moderator.

I'd recommend the autoglym range. There is a new website <snip> these stock all of the products, plus give a full description of each product.

The express wax is my favourite. Wash the car with the bodywork shampoo, use the waterblade to remove the heavy water or use a good chamois or microfibre.
the car does not need to be completely dry, spray on the aqua wax and wipe.

No hard work involved. It gives a great finish, fast effective, simple.

If you quote the same online store in all of your posts, people will become suspicious that you have interests in that business. Thanks for your recommendation of Autoglym, I've snipped the references to the particular online store. Welcome to boards.
