RTE viewing figures

Im wondering how RTE's viewing figures are doing recently? For example with this DTT farce and needing a sky sub to view RTE in digital on satellite i wonder if the viewing figures are on the decrease.

I for one very rarely watch Irish TV now. Lots of people i know have ditched Sky for a FTA UK system and get their TV from UK and Irish news from internet/radio.

Im in an area also where analouge TV coverage is limited so thats another nail in the coffin!

The world cup being in HD on the UK channels couldn't of helped viewing figures for RTE (A lot of people watched the football in HD and switched over just for the pundits)

In reality I would agree with you. I would not have the confidence in the official ratings system to capture this decrease though.

It's not really till analogue Switch off starts that anything to do with DTT is relevent.

FTA Satellite (no RTE), YouTube, poor Content and Cheaper DVDs though might be eating into figures VERY slightly.

About 80% have PayTV: Fibre, Cable and Satellite payTV all include RTE.

The ratings system is to provide information for advertisers. If a member of the ratings panel changes channels then that change will be logged. Ironically, by switching over from, say, BBC HD to RTE for the half time pundits means that they will have got 15 min out of you and the only section of the programme that contains a commercial break and the bit that the advertiser is interested.

Certainly RTE has increased competition from multi-channel TV but at the end of the day content is king and people do like local content that is relevant to them and RTE will always fare well in this respect. I would guess that if most multi-channel TV viewers had a look at their own viewing habits that of the 100's of channels available it would be the "terrestrials" (UK or reland) that would be on top of the pile.

The biggest of the non-terrestrial Sat/Cable channels are mostly less than 1% to 2%

The majority of channels don't reach 0.5%. There are many of them.

Most people have less than 10 regularly watched channels.
