I've been saying "Happy Christmas" for weeks to folk just to see their faces! LOL

    They think I'm nuts. :D

People are so dumb that on the 23rd of september 2030 people will be saying "you have to drink guiness today, it's Arthur's day" as if it's some sort of proper tradition and not a blatant marketing tool .

Poor old Smithwicks the useless older brother of the group turns 300 and he does even get a day of celebation but the golden child guiness gets another one for his 251st.

    That sick, wrong and disgusting

It's my birthday the day after, so i'll be out drowning my sorrows that night anyway :D

It's July now, so it's only about 10weeks away, i suppose...presume they'll be having concerts and things again.

I have no doubt that this will be a fully-fledged, internationally recognised festival like St. Patrick's Day in a few years. Gift shops actually have "Happy St. Patrick's Day" cards now. Unbelievable Jeff.

Ah for God's sake they're trying to celebrate the 251st year?!

    That's stupid.

I cared last year, but not this year.

Mr Smithwicks didn't pay for a park in the center of dublin and give it to the corperation for use of the people.

Besides.. its from Kilkenny, who cares?

Well the fact that I cared and other people did too shows that the 250th year is a marketable gimmick.

    The 251st though...that's a different story.

Its not so much the 251st birthday but just that it is a birthday that they are celebrating. You can probably expect it every year now!

Why do peope care that it is a marketing ploy?

It was a great day out last year, at a time of the year when we normally don't have much on, and people are gloomy.

I will be there with bells on, and if you want to piss on the parade you can stay at home drinking Bulmers Pear - you'll soon have other things to worry about.

mr guinness did a nice swap then, seeing as though he got a lease for something like 500 years for £1 or something for the brewery at st james gate.

I hope so. and due to it's immense popularity we get another national holiday out of it :)

Maybe because they might as well call it 'drink guinness day' but its being made out to be a valuable feature of our heritage or some ****e.

But we all KNOW that it isn't - it is a nationwide excuse for a piss-up.

    One nation united in double-think.

Like the way Jedward was a joke that we were playing on the world.

Couldent believe it last year i happened to be in two pubs one in wicklow one in Dublin (dont ask). Everyone was very merry and every minutes they would raise their glasses and roar" heres to Arthur". Since then ive never doubted the power of spin.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 118 ✭✭niamhallen

At the end of the day its all a big marketing ploy. Which works very well. So why not make it an annual thing? God knows we need something to lift our spirits.

I guess I just don't feel like I need diageo to make excuses to go to the pub, and I especially don't want or need them to encourage every pisshead in the town to go out on the same night and generally make the biggest mess since paddy's day/rag week.
