Does windows 7 not have a built in reader for SMART for drives? I've found 3rd party tools that work just fine but strange i haven't seen anything in windows 7.

I don't think Windows 7 has anything to display SMART data. But it does internally make use it, if the drive reaches its SMART threshold you will receive a warning informing you of this. Same applies in Vista. XP only logs the SMART warning to the event log, it doesn't display a warning message.
