iPhone 4 - Home Button Problem

    Hi Folks,

Been using my iPhone 4 for a few days now, and the build quality on mine is starting to annoy me. I have two iP4's for comparison so I have some grounding on this

    1) The phone periodically (Almost every two days) rejects my SIM card. Its installed, seated and fully functional but then I get a message "SIM Card Not Inserted" This does not happen on the other phone. Both use Vodafone SIM Cards and both are cut to suit. My card is "better cut" and sits better in the holder.

The only remedy is to cycle the phone twice and blow in the sim card slot. Then it works

    2) The home button. Place your finger on the home button and gently apply pressure (Don't press it in, just lightly press down) Now, move it in circles and in the four compass point directions (Up, Down, Left, Right) Mine moves around quite abit and clicks as I do so. Its no flush with the case and frankly is annoying. It feels cheap. The other phone doesn't do this and the button has a much better seating.

Has anyone else had these problems or is mine an oddball?

    Regards,

    ironclaw.

Mine is extremely lose compared to my 1G.

Ok, I'm going to get this phone replaced. Its unacceptable that a €600 phone has a useless home button. Its cheap.

For a €600 phone Apple should have had far better build quality.

Agreed. My 1G is fine. The iTouch is fine. The 3G is fine. Why the sloppiness on the iP4? I'll get it replaced once there is a revision. I really can't understand it. It moves a considerable amount, it may as well be a joystick.

Small update on this folks. The SIM Card problem is widespread. I'm getting the phone replaced this week. Extremely annoyed.

Are you sure the sim issue isn't related to the cutting down of a mini-sim. There are actually different technical standards at work here too other than just a difference in size. Maybe the phone sometimes tries to use a function (e.g. the network spoofing stuff thats new to the microsim) that isn't available on your old sim card?

No, it can't be. I have two iPhone 4's for comparison. My SIM Card is actually newer than the other one, both are cut the same. Identical. Its a widespread problem in the US on AT&T apparently.

The Home Button is still acting up.

And the final nail in the coffin, the new "This Accessory is Not Optimized for this iPhone" error (Again see Google, appears to be a big problem)

Getting this replaced as frankly its beyond a joke.

OK now this is weird. My home button was slightly loose. As of now it is rock sold with no wiggle what so ever.

would you not get a proper micro sim first? A DIY job is never going to be the same.

Ok. I have the replacement. Wow. The difference. The button is perfect, no wobble or movement. I'm waiting this time for a proper MicroSIM. Besides the chance it won't work, I'm also worried I'll damage the SIM tray and the phone itself.

I'll keep posting once I'm up and running.

    Ok, time for an update

    1) The Home Button - Its now perfect. Interestingly enough the Demo units in the Apple Store had a lot of free play. However one didn't, its serial number had A4S at the end. My new iPhone has A4S and so does my brothers. All of them have a perfect button. Interesting.

    2) SIM Tray - I'm going to put this down to a dodgy cut SIM. I think it shorted the contacts. My personal recommendation is to switch to a real MicroSIM asap. I waited for mine and its worked perfectly (Vodafone IRL)

    3) Dock Connector - I found out this is a registered problem and was actually the grounds for the replacement.

Finally, Apple will replace any iPhone 4 for £139 without questions. I asked was this for any damages and they said yes. Can anyone elaborate on that?

Apple should not charge you to replace the iphone if its faulty.

I got a replacement yesterday for free and the serial also ends with A4S.

Did you mean that you got charged or will Apple replace anyones iphone 4 for that money (so if you have managed to break the screen you can get a replacement for 139 pounds??

Just to be clear, my replacement was free of charge as the problem was registered with Apple Genius staff. Apparently the dock connector can give trouble and its an instant no quibble replacement.

From my understanding, if you have the phone in your hands and I presume if its not water damaged, they'll replace for £139 sterling. I'd say its to combat the phone insurance market as you'd roughly spend that per year insuring your phone.

I have problems with my iphone 4's home button too. It doesnt seem to register when i click it. It was a bit dodgy yesterday and the day before. I had to press once or twice before it would register a click but today it seems to have completely died on me.

I rang the customer care and they said that i should do a complete system reset.

When i first bought the iphone 4, i thought it was one of the best phones ever. However i have been having all sorts of complaints since then. First it was calls being disconeected , i had to buy a casing to solve this problem. Now this... I am starting to have second thoughts about the quality of iphones...

Quality has taken a massive dive since the first one. My 1G is still going strong and never gave an ounce of trouble. I've been through 4 iPhone 4's. They all had problems. I think its simple volume vs quality. People want iPhones just to have one. Very few appreciate it as a piece of tech and fewer appreciate the quality. I spent €600 on a phone that I feel quality wise is below a €50 Nokia.

my button is the same. i have to tap it several times for it to register. sometimes i do the double tap to bring up the multitasking bar along the bottom, and it doesn't it goes back out of the app i was in to the main page! then sometimes i single tap to go out to the main page and it brings up multitasking!!!! and then somtimes i tap it to bring up the unlock screen and have to tap it five or six times before the screen is brought up and i can unlock my phone.

i am getting a little sick of it now tbh.

when i got my iphone4 last july after just under a month i picked it up one day and it was turned off. so i turned it on thinking 'i don't remember turning it off'. it said connect to itunes (like it does when you first get it) but when i connected it to itunes it wouldn't sync. so apple had me send it back and they sent me a new one.

i don't think i am as attached to iphones as i once was. when i got the iphone1 it was new, exciting and there were not many decent smartphones on the market. there are plenty to choose from now, so i may go for something different when i choose to upgrade (especially as i have moved to meteor and they don't do iphones).

my only concern there is, if i no longer have a sim in my iphone will i still be able to access all my music and use my apps over wifi (basically turning the phone into an itouch) or am i actually going to have to go out and fork out a hape of money to buy an itouch?
