Seemingly he's been doing super low-profile IM training. What a result!

Nice one Tunney. Congrats! (and there I was thinking he was going to stun us with a 2:3x marathon, and all the time he was secretly persisting with the IM training!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

I'd say the 2:3x marathon is still on the cards.... but in any case I've just been told from the master cyclist himself that there are a couple of interesting reports come. One covering Feb - taper and one the race day itself... talk about keeping us hanging, you'd think he has something better to be doing today rather than what he should be doing, writing race reports for us all :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭nomadic

He kept that quiet alright. Well done. Looking forward to the reports.

    Well done!! Brilliant performance

I like the way that he's only just finished the IM in Austria in a superb time and we've already committed him to a 2:3x marathon. What else can we put on his agenda? :)

He's not a real runner until he goes sub 2:30 for a mara anything else is jsut wasting your time. ;)

Well done Joyce. Amazing time! She told me during a physio session that she was nowhere near professional standard. She may have to rethink that! :D

    amazing results all round!

Wow. A great event. My first IM but hopefully not last! Definitely recommend it.

The atmosphere around the place for the 4 days I was there was just fantastic. The locals really come out and support, especially on the run route when you are slogging around. I'd read about the noise in the canal at the end of the swim and it didn't dissappoint. I'll put a race report together at some stage - a bit of payback for long time lurking!

I came across a few Irish on the run route - all of us seemed to have to fight our own demons at stages on the run so be ready for it.

For the moment just a quick thanks to all who have been posting IM logs and/or guidance. It helped me hugely.

If you're thinking about one for next year there was some great training posts by Hunnymonster and Tunney back in late 2009. I also got some great pointers from a couple of previous Austria race reports, especially Potsy.

Super report Tunney! Thanks for putting it up.

Did you sign up for next year's IM Austria?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,034 ✭✭✭griffin100

Well done Tunney - great race report. I can relate to the bit where you talk about not wanting to allow training to impact on being a Dad (or words to that effect). I sometimes think that doing an IM is probably one of the most selfish things I've ever done as no matter how hard I try and no matter what I tell myself the training does impact on my time with my family - in my case a patient wife and 3 kids 6 years old and under. I think anyone doing an IM owes a hell of lot to their other half and their kids for their patience:)

    So whats next?

Great update, delighted you got thru it so sucessfully - an inspiration to all - especially those with kids!!!

Well done Tunney, really enjoyed the report. Tears of joy for a change, delighted for you :) You had a fantastic base behind you so it was all about battling your demons and staying within yourself and you succesfully ticked all the boxes. Big monkey off your back and I'm sure you felt alive inside approaching the finish! Major Kudos

How do those groups get a away with it? Do they not have draft busters motoring up and down the route? I know its 180km but still not hard to spot groups though!

Fantastic report tunney. Congrats again on a fantastic achievement.

I assume that the training model you adopted requires a good solid base from years of traditional training?

Are you going to add your figures to the ART Challenge? :D

Well done again on a super race and a very enjoyable read.

My pleasure, good to write it down to learn from races.

As much as I would have loved to enter again, and I would go back to Austria in a heartbeat. Its been made quite clear that "that is the fvcking end of Austria, we're never fvcking going back". (Curses inserted by me for dramatic effect)

Glenda is fantastic. Her support and patience and advice are amazing. Triathlon is a team sport.

Seemingly the next IM "must be done in an excellent time, and the whole run should be run, no walking".

Whats next is alchol, junk and chocolate, and plenty of family time. Then really just roll with things and do what I want when I want. Maybe DCM, maybe DCT, maybe some cross country, maybe nothing. I reckon maybe one more IM and put into practice everything I learnt this year as I learnt the absolute most about myself, training, and how to make the most of what you have and be happy with it.

Felt fantasitc finishing. The Austrian chapter is over, done, finished.

The groups were huge. The draft busters rode beside them for ages, but the penalty tents were not as packed as I had thought they would be.

Still I had expected the groups and didn't let it stress me.

No the training model would work for anyone.

Not going to add my numbers to the ART Challenge, doesn't matter how much I did, all that matters is what I got out of the miles.

tunney, a great read. delighted for you and good to meet you on the day. when I met you on the run I was having a debate with myself as to whether I was doing 9 minute kms or 9 minute miles. it's amazing how much relief comes when you realise you only have 3 more hours to run rather than 5!

I loved reading the line about the stress falling away when you saw the family with the teeshirts on. I had mine with me over the weekend and, for me, it was probably the best part of it all.

From about 5k out on the run I thought I could beat a time goal and managed to pick up my run a bit (in context!). I turned left to start the finishers run in still trying to push the pace and not able to see the race clock and then I saw my 3 little girls waiting for me to the side.

I was torn! What could I do!! In fairness, Mrs Notwitch had been brilliant and even after having to manage 3 under 8s through a 14 hour day supporting daddy in 30 degrees of heat and a thunderstorm, she'd checked the clock, managed to get the message across on timing and hand over the 3 girls. I knew I had missed my 12 hours so grabbed the girls and had a brilliant run in with them and got a finishers picture with 4 of the biggest smiles ever.

Are you DSQ for crossing the line with kids etc..?

No problems, you just assume liablilty for injuries to them, yourself and other competitors.

I was meant to carry aoibhe across the line but decided to sprint to gain three places. Got in trouble for that. Plus dropping a sweaty tot would be pretty easy to do :)

I was hoping so as I'd have a good excuse to go back next year!
