after being disapointed with an LCD i was sold by the local retailer , i have decided to change it for a 42 inch plasma , i have two options , go for the X 20 series which has 100hz or the S20 series which has 600hz , the difference in price is 150 quid , im no techno wizzard so i was wondering whether thier would be much difference in terms of picture quality and whether the one with the 600hz is worth paying extra for

Had a quick look at the specs S20 and X20 and 2 things stand out for me: the S20 is a Full HD screen with 1920 x 1080 pixels and has 6,144 levels of gradation. The X20 is HD Ready 1024 x 768 pixels and only 4096 levels of gradation.

A Full HD 1080p panel will display BluRays at their best.

The lower the gradation level the more obvious banding will be on large areas of a single colour, eg: blue skies, dark shadows, etc. The dark opening scenes of films like "The Matrix" or "Dark City" really show up banding on Flat TVs.

IMO, long after you've forgotten the initial outlay for the screen you'll be enjoying top picture quality :)

Just made this choice myself today. I went for the 50 inch x20 though if I could have found an S20 for only 150 more than the 799 including wallmount, I would have gone fir the s20.

After Reading up on this years models I had talked myself into a 50G20. Luckily I reminded myself in time of all the reasons I had for not buying the latest go faster stripe model. Firstly the only 1080p source is Bluray with every other source bar a PC being no more than 720p. Group blind tests have shown that most people can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p source/display till screen sizes went to 130 inches diagonal or more. ie. Projector screen sizes. Unless people sit 2ft from their 42,50,65 inch plasmas, most wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

1080p can have it's downsides too. Scaling to 1080p is harder than to 720p and thus unless the plasmas scaler is very good, Standard def can look worse on a 1080p panel than a 720p panel. That's why the G20 got such rave reviews cause only this year did Panasonic really get their scaling right on their full Hd 1080p panels.

I also rationalised to myself that I have no complaints about my 3 or 4 year old PX70's. I either don't notice the problems people talk about with the picture or the problems don't bother me enough to care.

So today I bit the bullet on an 50X20 and boy am I glad I didn't talk myself into a S20 or G20. Picture was great on all my standard def shows on my server via my xbmc streamers and Planet Earth on bluray on this Hd Ready 720p panel was stunning. I can't believe I get a better Tv of 50 inches for 750 when only a few shirt years ago I paid 1300 for a 42 inch.

If the law of diminishing returns doesn't bother you and you want a better picture no matter what the cost then get at least the G20. (up north because panny Ireland decided not to distribute this model here for some reason)
