    www antennashop ie

Hi guys, just wondering if anybody has any experience from these guys. I travelled to mullingar only to find out that they dont have a retail premises, and no phone number listed on the website. I got stung by a website with no phone number before so I am SERIOUSLY paranoid about dealing with such a company.

But I seriously need an aerial (or something) to help boost the signal, is there anywhere else I could get one...

mods, I know I put up a similar thread but I got no response, you can delete this if you wish. I'd just rather not give these people my money without a bit of prior vetting.

but why wouldn't you just buy an antenna from a reputable supplier - UK or ireland?

Looks like it's a home run business, no actual shop. That's not to say it's not reliable, but you wouldn't be too sure.

As for the aerials, I've never seen any evidence that passive aerials like these actually do anything. It might just be a waste of money.

They only have one 1/2 decent aerial

It's more than twice the price of similar spec aerials elsewhere

A high gain directional aerial is the only useful choice for poor home reception. The other kinds of aerials only for cars, vans, buses etc that have RF blocking window coatings, usually as part of UV filter.

I think it's an overpriced local franchise of http://www.mobilebroadbandantennas.com/

    There are better shops.

It is a franchise, I spotted the same website for New Zealand and a few other countries..

It was actually this one I was going to buy. But I'm not buying from a site that doesnt have a phone number, got stung with that before from a well known Irish Cartridges site. Could you recommend a better site to buy from. I've been googling, but I must be googling with the wrong words, cos I'm not finding anything.

I posted links a few weeks ago in this forum

    bing/google high gain 3G aerial
    about 100,000 hits

Aim for about €60 from UK. If more than €20 you will be hit for 21% VAT from Hong Kong / Singapore / Tiawan, so aim for about €45 from there.

Look for about 17dbi (about 15dBd) directional 2100MHz (2.1GHz). Multiband is poorer and GSM 900MHz or 1800MHz won't give more than 240kbps. It will have FME connector and then you have FME to whatever pigtail your modem uses.

For longer cable order an N-Connector version instead and then use RG213 or LMR400 extension cable with N-type to FME short cable to adapt to the modem pigtail cable.

    Hi watty!

I was told by someone before that with a cable from the external antenna to the modem, if it's longer than 5m, attenuation really starts to kick in and hugely affect speeds.

    What's your experience of this?

    Lower loss extension cables.

More than 2m you use RG213. More than 10m you use LMR400

    Fatter cable has lower loss.

The worst is the skinny cable of pigtail, which is why it's short. The fatter a cable is the stiffer it is and also it must NOT be bent in as sharp a curve. All cables have a minimum bend radius. Never force a sharp corner.
