I think I need to run a race- first one since I was u18- and that was too long ago! Do I pick a fun run type race that might not give me the experience I need or do I pick a more serious road race and face the embarrassment of arriving home 10 mins after everyone else or worse still dropping out. I'm going 5k average 25 mins- am I too slow to be thinking of running a race yet?

Not at all many races now days cater for all levels. There are many training plans which can be found for 5ks. Alot of people dind the couch to 5k plan to be good.
With choosing the race one thing you can do is check previous years race results to see what the level of athlete is and whether or not a particular race apeals to you.
Have you a rough time frame in mind regarding when you want to race (like what month) maybe someone here can give you a few options for racing.
Best of luck with your training sometimes a race can give you the motivation to train and may help you develop

Gheesh Madon - 25 mins for a 5K is definitely not too slow to start racing!? There's lots of much slower runners out there (me included:D) doing races all over the place.

I'd go with ecoli on the point of picking a timeframe and finding a suitable race.
You might find some suitable events here?

Good luck with the training and the future racing.

Think everyone is always worried about finishing last when starting out (sometimes still am!) but based on your training time you have nothing to worry about ...go for it

pick a race and just go for it , even if your last whats the harm, someone needs to be and there will still be people there cheering you on when you finish, but i think with your times you should be fine ;) hi if nothing else its a training run you dont have to do on your own. i was the same when i started nerves about beening slow etc but once i did my first race i was hooked, made loads of good mate who i seem to meet all over the country at different events so in the words ot the great nike company " just do it" i promise you once you do you wont regret it

Thanks for the replies- yeah think I'll just go for it- will let you know which race I go- there is a few close to me in the next few weeks and thats what got me thinking about running one.
Its very hard to gauge when you run on your own how far on you are. I used to run years ago rarely any more than 200 metre races I suppose the experience of that will stand for me- but road races is a whole new thing for me too.
