    Hi All

New to the Board, looks great

I am hoping somone can help me. Is it possible to find either Land Rovers(any Make/Model) or any 4 X 4 for that matter that maybe destined for the scrap heap but with a lot of work and time could be made work again.

I have little or no cash(tho I do have a BMW 320I I want rid of), but am happy to get any junker and start work on it.

Any ideas if there is any out there? If not can anyone recommend sites or forums to keep an eye on.

Last question. Junk Yards, are they worth a visit?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

    Many thanks

    Laz

I'd say you might get a better response in the dedicated 4x4 forum - let me know if you'd like me to move this.

    Hi and welcome.

Land Rover wise and most others, if it's cheap and needs work, it's going to take a fair bit of money to make it a goer. Land Rovers have the cheapest spares support and probably the best knowledge base but you will need to be a good welder too. Are you looking for a plaything or something that's road legal and useable?

Most of the lads over on the Irish section of the LRA forum know of pretty much every abandoned LR in the county or have them put by or broken for spares!

If you're going Japanese, the problem is going to be body panels and cost of spares although Milners and a couple of others in the UK are good.

101sean, you are a gentleman, I appreciate the advice.

To answer your question: initially as a toy just to get to know about chassis, electrics etc etc, call it a test mule.

Next Year I'll have the dosh to get a decent one I hope(and I'd appreciate your input there!) The Disco is the one that pulls the heartstrings the most at this end bu tanything would do to be honest.

Another thing I have to ask, is there clubs that a non LR owner is welcome at and can participate in, get to know the ropes etc etc?

Thanks for your help, its really appreciated

Ok, if a disco does it for you, they are cheap, but the boot floors and inner wings rot out. Not a problem if you want to bobtail one and create an off roader. Even keeping it going you can buy boot floors and repairs sections if you can weld.

At the last Dartfield open day there were a load of modified suzukis, Daihatsus and Pajeros that were trailered in, they could never be road legal but great for playing in the woods without worrying about damage.

Club wise, non LR clubs are http://www.ifwdc.com/ and http://leinster4x4.ie/vbulletin/images/slideshow/phpslideshow.php

Land Rover wise there are a couple of proper clubs and several loose unofficial groups. I'm a Hillbilly (http://hillbilly4x4.org/smf/index.php) but not a member of a formal club in this country, I have been round long enough to know some of the main characters though!

When you decide what you want, sign up to one one of the clubs or forums and get yourself known, you'll get good advice. Carry on asking here as well and let us know how you get on.
