So, JC stated in Q that their follow-up to 2006's First Impressions of Earth is slated for an early 2011 release. :) Any thoughts on this?

For me, FIOE had a clutch of stunners (Razorblade, You Only Live Once, Ize Of The World yadda yadda) but the later half of the album was dampened with extraneous filler (Anyone here able to hum Fear of Sleep eh?). I really hope they can reinstate themselves as a vital force in Alternative music. Julian's solo outing contained touches of synthesized magic, would be nice to see the other boys help him push the boat further out.

I absolutely love First Impressions of Earth. One of my fave albums of the decade. They have a lot to live up to, really hope they do.

I don't mind if they stick to the tried and trusted formula of their music, as long as it's still catchy and leaving me wanting some more, then I can't complain :pac:

Do you prefer First Impressions to Is This It? Don't know many Strokes fans whose preferences lie that way.

I do, as a matter of fact :pac:

love the band to bits.... haven't seen them yet in concert....gutted..

First impressions had some great tunes on it!

Razorblade and Redlight are the best for me..

cant wait for the new album...hope it is not electronic

i doubt it will be electronic. i think that was the point of the solo album, hopefully to get it out of his system.

Saw them live in June and I was left a little cold. I think they've lost their fire and or have given way to in-fighting/bitchiness...

I've seen them twice - March '02 at the Olympia and November '03 in the Ulster Hall. Looking forward to hearing their new stuff.

Gigs '25 - Spiritualized, Orbital, Supergrass, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Vantastival

JC is way better than the strokes but would be happy for any new stuff.

I have mixed feeling about this one, the album keeps getting pushed back and I've been hearing that they don't record the songs together.I just hope it's better than FIOE, which I did like, but next to their previous releases it doesn't quite stand up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭KeanSeenan

I also hope Fab gets more input as his solo project was brilliant.

why is julian casablancas called Fab? or is it one of the other guys?

Another guy, Fab Moretti, think he's the drummer, although maybe getting mixed up with lead guitar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭KeanSeenan

He's the drummer and he's also in this band

Which has the lead guitarist(Nick) playing drums in it.

Anyone heard Under Cover of Darkness? Musically it;s very "is this it" vocally it's like they got rid of JC

For those who didn't catch it, the Strokes played on SNL last night, debuting new track 'Life Is Simple In The Moonlight'. Very chill Strokes tune, not sure what I make of it yet, really need to hear the studio version!

Second song reminded me of this, well the chorus did.

Just a friendly reminder to keep this point from the Alt/Indie charter in mind when posting please.

Has anyone else noticed this youtube account? Has posted two new tunes, 'Machu Picchu' and 'Taken For A Fool' along with 30-second clips from each tune on 'Angles'.

    How did these surface?

Isn't it just? 'Taken For A Fool' is also an excellent tune IMO. There's one part around the 1.26 mark that actually left me foaming at the mouth with excitement.

My favourite of the new tunes, thus far, is probably 'You're So Right'. Absolute cracker of a tune.

Just listened to the album twice, brilliant back to their best

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,210 ✭✭✭maximoose

Had my second listen through this morning, and i f*cking love it. First Impressions of Earth had far too many filler tracks and was just pretty weak in general, but this is definitely back to their best. Love every track, although You're So Right took some growing on me!

Also, is that Regina Spektor doing all the female back up vocals? Sounds very like her anyway and wouldn't be surprising as they've worked together before

Taken for a Fool and Metabolism are my favourites at the minute, but its changing a lot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,126 ✭✭✭✭calex71

Metabolism here as well, it's excellent, Games is another one i like alot.

"Machu Picchu", "Life is Simple in the Moonlight" (instant classics) and to a lesser extent "Taken for a Fool" and "Under Cover of Darkness" - are the only songs that really seem to hold up to the quality of The Strokes back catalogue.

As interviews have suggested, this album is a missed opportunity - Comprised of Half brilliant songs with catchy hooks and Half unconvincing filler experiments (I actually loved First Impressions so I've nothing against a bit of experimentation).

Call me Back (the worst song I've heard by them), Metabolism and Two Kinds of Happiness just don't cut it at all - sound like songs that weren't good enough to make it on Julian's solo album.

From listening to it a few times I think that it is a big improvement on First Impressions on Earth.

Life is Simple in the Moonlight and Machu Picchu are great tracks.

Don't know is is as good as Is This It or Room on Fire but not far off...won't make up my mind until a few more listens.

All in all it's a very good album compared to what's out there at the minute!

Great album. One of the best of the year, and its been a pretty dire year for music imo. Up there with their best stuff

Yeah, these three months have really been awful and are the perfect indication of the whole year..

Underwhelmed. A few good songs, a few duds, a few meh.

I was so excited about it coming out that it just felt like a big let-down. It won't be getting too many plays once the novelty wears off and Room On Fire gets taken out again instead.

Still, Under Cover of Darkness has been stuck in my head in a big way over the last few days. Makes football awkward as I have a weird habit of breathing to the beat of songs :D

Ditto all of the above for me too, well except for the weird football breathing bit...

Ya, I know, it's weird :p... Worst was way back in the days of polyphonic ringtones and right before a match The Torreador's Song rang off somewhere on the sideline. Needless to say I was out of breath for a lot of that match!
