Haven't seen any, but not looking forward to these popping up all over the place.

    It's US-only for the moment.

Will they appear at random when using the phone (e.g. if moving between the iphone and the sms message screen) or just in specific places in specific apps?

Also, someone posted an optout link on this forum a couple of days ago, must go searching.

Guil (post below) is right, the optout only stops them collecting data to make you more targeted ads.

They aren't going to pop up or appear randomly. For developers who use them they'll appear as a banner in their apps. To expand the ad you'll have to tap on them, and you can close them just as easily. Apps already use banner ads. iAds really isn't going to make a difference to most users.

I don't know why people are so negative about iAds.

It's just an improvement on how ads are done at the moment, which is if you tap on a banner it brings you out of the ap and onto a webpage in Safari, and then you have to go back yourself to your original ap page.

iAds, will not be ads popping up all over the place, but when you opt to click on an ad banner (that would be there anyway) it will bring you to a more ap-like advertising experience and you can navigate out of the ad at any time and go straight back to your ap quickly and very easily.

This was made very clear in the presentation given by Jobs about it and how people are twisting it to say that it will lead to pop up ads all over the place is beyond me.

You can expect to see iAds in many free apps especially the gimicky ones. All the developer has to do is put in the relevant code and they are a part of the network and they'll see a few cents down the line.

You can be almost guaranteed that most iAds will be network buys and will be a lot of the "you're eligible for a US Visa" or you've won the lottery type of ads you see on low rent web sites. As time goes by they are likely to get more intrusive.

Anybody with premium content and a good brand will want to keep an ad serving to themselves. This means they can get more money from better advertisers.

I think the opposite will be true. This is Apple we're talking about - they have a brand & image to protect. I wouldn't be surprised if they have an ad approval process in place.

Unfortunately. it will be the market that will decide that and not Apple. From what I understand is that Iads effectively provides an advertiser space on a network of apps - from tacky upwards. Apple aren't going to allow cherry picking of apps but will probably allow a client to buy accross a category of apps e.g. Music and it will also probably allow some sort of geo targeting. Premium brands aren't going to go this route - they don't want to be on the Fart app, they'll want to be in a premium app that is representative of their brand. They will seek out the quality apps and buy space on those apps. In turn, there is not a hope in hell that any premium brand app is going to be a part of the iAds network when they can sell themselves.

iAds is ideal for the 1000's of apps that are too small in themselves to be sold to advertisers but collectively can provide an opportunity that can be sold as a network. The network buys tend to be the low grade stuff and even the better brands that appear will still mean little money for the app owner.
