Fractured metacarpal

My OH fractured his 3rd metacarpal in 2 places on his left hand a couple of days ago. It was initally put into a cast in A&E and the middle two fingers strapped together. Anyway he went to see the consultant this morning and he took the cast off, re-strapped the middle fingers and said it was fine for him to use it now!…

Anyway he went to see the consultant this morning and he took the cast off, re-strapped the middle fingers and said it was fine for him to use it now! Does this sound right? I mean how can a break heal if you are using it all the time and it has no protection? I thought he would be in a cast for 4 weeks or so.
