Insurance on multiple cars, how does it work?

Just a question to all of the people out there who are insured to drive a second car. What way have you got the insurance sorted? I'm planning on buying a second car which would mainly be used for weekend use. It's a 3.2 litre and and would be horrifically expensive to insure as a second car under my own name.

What way do you guys have your insurance set up?

I'm 24 as well so that makes open driving a bit of a balls.

If your second car's over 20 years old then it's easy - a classic policy will cost very little. Otherwise you need a second normal policy - the problem here is that you can only use your NCB on one policy at a time. You may get an introductory bonus on the second policy which will lessen the pain a bit, but at 24 and a 3.2 it's going to cost a fortune. I'd say forget about it for a year (AFAIK most classic policies require you to be 25) and then get something over 20 yrs old.

I've two cars and the only way (unless you have trade insurance!) to insure two cars is to take out a new policy....ie. starting from 0 yrs no claims discount....on the second policy. If I were you I'd transfer the policy you have now on the bigger engined car and take a new policy on the smaller car. Thats what I did and after the inital payout in the 1st year after 3years I've two cars insured fully comp for €930.

My brother is over 25 and has his own policy. Would it be wiser to put it in his name and just put me as a named driver? I'm actually planning on buying it with him so it would actually be lying or anything. would that be the best option?

Most of the time, with two cars, you operate two policies, building up separate NCDs on each, so you would transfer the new car to your current policy (presuming you've built up a decent NCD) and take out a new policy for your current car.

I don't think there's a specialist company out there that would insure you for weekends only - too complicated from an admin point of view, but you might be able to get a discount for limited mileage from most companies.

edit:took too long to reply, Anan1 et al beat me to it :)

That might still be expensive - what's the car?

I thought I read somewhere that there is one of the companies, Quinn possibly, that allow you to use your NCB on two different cars, but I could be wrong about that.

Either way, no matter how you work it youre going to be paying a fortune for insurance on a 3.2l car at 24 years old.

A nice one! I'll tell you once its finalised. Suffice to say it makes an epic epic noise. Its not a classic car either...well not yet anyway ;)

But I just checked it out on 123.ie there anyway. That is definitely the way to go IF he gets insured on it as his primary car and can use his NCB. It would work out at about €500 each.

    Nah.

Fleet policies do exist however, but are not marketed to the general public.

If your parents are up for it put it in their name and get one of them to insure it, then drive it third party. Nothing Illegal about it. Same thing with your brother really.

A friend of mine rang Axa asking about the limitations with the third party cover were, he asked does the engine size matter, to which he got

"Not really, just don't take the piss with a 3.2 or the likes!"

And he's not really. It's a grey area, but perfectly legal.

I think the limit depends on the company. When I was with Axa I was told they would only cover me up to a 1.6. At the same time my sister, while on a provisional license, was told she could drive a Ferrari if someone was stupid enough to hand her the keys. My current insurance company let me drive anything I want as far as I know.

    Setanta Insurance - http://www.setantainsurance.com/

They will mirror your current bonus, they only sell through brokers though.

Don't even need current bonus with them and they offer Open Drive 24-70 Full or Learner license.

Thats who Im with currently! Probably where I heard it tbf...

I actually asked my broker about insuring my old car at the same time as my new car and she said I could only use my NCB on one car. I wonder if she knows about that with Setanta.
