    Hey guys.
I am 30 and want to take up self defence was mugged by a syringe totting scumbag a while back and just want to be able to look after myself. I am a quiet kinda shy guy not very confident after it,so nervous bout even taking one up.
I cant decide which to do looking at karate and taekwon do in Limerick, but i am open. Which can be picked up quickly and used effectively (prob a stupid question)?
Hope you guys can give some sound advice.
Apologises in advance if this something that has already been discussed.

maybe try boxing or thai boxing?Something that is full contact and has a good bit of sparring in it would be good for your confidence and would be handy enough if a fight does break out.

EDIT:sorry somehow missed the karate/tkd part of your post

You could check out the Combat Sport Center in Limerick, as an option.

I would totally second what lab mouse just said. Choose any striking art that applies full contact, and you can't go far wrong.

But, I'd definitely add some good literature on street assaults to the mix, as it doesn't really matter how good you are if you can't see a threat coming in the first place - to paraphrase my instructor.

Check out something like "Three Second Fighter" by Geoff Thompson for a stat. It's only a few quid and will definitely give you some very good advice on the anatomy of street confrontation.

Here you go man - it's the second last book down the page:

"Three Second Fighter - the sniper option".

    Might even be on Amazon.

    Cheers,

    Rob.

    MMA/BJJ @ Combat sports centre

    Thaiboxing in Perry Square

Krav Maga/Judo in UL (cant recommend the Krav Maga in UL cause iv never been, but I hear its decent, have to be carefull though with this though cause theres a lot of chancers running classes)

Kickboxing in the Eastway business park

Just google them, theres a pile of boxing/TKD/Karate clubs around (boxing gyms are arsey about taking on lads over a certain age)

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned so far, but any martial arts instuctor worth their salt will tell you that if you're confronted by someone with a syringe you should either run for the hills or give them whatever they want. Very rarely you might be forced to do something, but it's a losing proposition.

That said if you just want to take up a new hobby and gain some self-confidence rather than be a street-fighting urban commando, you can't go wrong with the Combat Sport Centre.
