Does anyone have any experience or advice of large sliding glazed panels. We are instaling a very large window in our kitchen which will contain 4 panels each approx 2.3 metres wide and 2.9 metres high. There will be 3 panels along the back wall and 1 retuning at the side. Only 1 panel will slide. (the middle of the back 3)

Check our BDG, web site BDG.Co.uk they are based in N.I ( I have no connection, but i have purchased from them )
they make aluminium sliders which may be what you want, and they have rep's in Republic.

at 2.9m high its probably too tall for PVC, and you will have to use 6mm toughened glass units at least, it not laminate.

If you have created the opening in an existing kitchen what did the arch specify, or if its a new build same question.

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply, the ope will have the usual beams and corner column, it is a renovation job.
I realise it will probably be aluminium and toughened glass, most suppliers are trying to sell us various combinations of patio door systems bolted together and not the design that Architect supplied.
I'm just looking for advice and any do's and don't from anyone who has gone down this road.
What were they like to deal with?

    Hi there,

2.9m is pretty tall for most sliding systems.

You can defintely get it in Aluminium but the U-Value wont be very good (2.2Wm2K approx)

You might get it in Timber or Timber Aluclad using a Lift and Slide system but alot of companies might shy away from the 2.9m height.

Lift Slide Systems are now available in uPVC but i am pretty sure they can not be made to 2.9m tall.

if you are willing to drop your height to 2.7m then can get this kind of sliding door in nearly all systems.

Also the normal width limit of a single Lift Slide system in 6.4m, this is due to the thermally broken step on the systems, it is not manufactured in longer lengths and it is not really recommended to joint this steps mid unit.

some of the timber / alu windows companies will be able to give you some advice.

For large sliders I'd recommend the ROLLHERmetric Klein JC 150 mechanism for ironmongery. Its lift and slide and hung from above,
