Custom Fitting v Buying off the shelf

Lads (& ladies), talk me through the advantages of going to a proper golf pro/shop and getting cutom fitted for a set of clubs versus just walking in and buying off the shelf.
Does custom fitting match the clubs to your current swing and if so then why not change your swing to match the clubs?
What do they do with custom fitting - change shaft length/stiffness/loft etc?

    Confused....
    Cheers

    Hi,
If u are 5 8 to 5 11 tall swing hit your 9 iron around 135-140 and have a reasonable good ball flight and take a divot that is flat neither the toe or heel digging in more you might not find much benefit from a custom fit, If you are only a learner and getting lessons not much point until you have a consistent swing. I think the lower your handicap and more consistent your swing the more you will benefit the slight differences in shaft kick points and stiffness ECT will help your ball striking. I still think anyone who is spending 300 quid plus should spend the extra 30 to get a fit its no harm and will make sure you are not getting something that is not going to help your game.

While I agree with most of your comments 135-140 with a 9 iron is well above standard amateur average distance. I'd say your average player would be more in the 115-120 bracket. That's not to say a fitting wouldn't benefit them.

Was just about to say 135-140 sounds very long for a 9 iron to me. I would have thought 120 would be about right.

    I hit a 9i 135 yards.

Then again, different manufacturers have different lofts for said clubs.

    Taylormade R9 - 41* (9 iron)
    Mizunu mx200 - 41* (9 iron)
    Titleist MB - 43* (9 iron)

I want to get a driver fitted at time of purchase, there is a lot to be said for club fitting, but I reckon if you have a solid swing you will find the benefits, If you are not of average height you will find the benefits, but its probably debatable whether its of any use if you have a poor swing as no amount of fitting can correct that.

We could spend all day posting about this subject. There are so many factors to consider, your playing level, physical build, the ammount of time you intend to put into the game, whether you are spending big bucks or looking for a cheaper set to start off.
If you are new to the game get a 2nd hand set and spend some money on lessons which will improve your game faster. If moneys no object buy a good set and get custom fit, remember that the fit can be altered later.
I bought a new set of irons last week and got them adjusted 1deg flat which sounds like nothing but it made a big difference to the quality of the strike and resulting ballflight.

Maybe i was going for a average sand iron around 110 which i thought was the norn think it i read it in one of the golf mags then adding 12% for each iron. If 120 is the average i'm really long with a 9 iron.

Thats funny because I was toying with the idea of using a midsize grip or extra tape because the thicker grips felt good in my hands. In the end I picked up a set of Mizuno MP57's for a steal and got them adjusted by the pro as part of the sale.
