Is it a requirement for most good golf clubs in Ireland that guest players have a GUI handicap in order to play a casual round? Your thoughts...

As in to pay a green fee and play? A lot of "good clubs" would take a lot of green fees from foreign tourists, none of whom would have a GUI handicap you'd assume.

not 1 course in the country would ask for a gui card for a casual round, comp's only and even then i know a lot of clubs don't check up for team events for e.g

you sometimes see clubs state in advance that they want to see a handicap certificate for a visitor, but i have never been asked. In fact i havent seen this for a while, maybe its not practised so much now? not sure..

Last time i personally was asked, was about 15years ago where we requested to play Royal Birkdale.

myself and a few lads were away in Italy a couple of years ago,one of the boys plays off about 18 or so but no hcp,the pro asked us all out to the range to hit a few irons,my mate's not too bad but he bricks it when a stranger looks at him,he couldn't get the ball airborne so the pro wouldn't let him play,he spent the avo in the bar,was well pisssed off

I couldnt see that happening today, times are too hard. ****ty form of the pro to exclude one lad anyway.

I played Wentworth in 1996 and hadn't a handicap at the time and got looked over by Bernard Gallagher who was not long after being the Ryder Cup winning captain... most nervous over a shot ever. Driver, 3 wood, 2 putts for a birdie (downhill from there).

The only place I've really been asked to produce a cert is the Old Course at St. Andrews where they have more demand than supply anyway.

Did you have one with you or how did you get out?

Yes, you need a cert and for men be 24 handicap or less. Brought the cert each time we travelled.

I was searching "handicap certificate" needed to play golf courses abroad and I came across this thread and this particular post. I'm heading over to Italy this summer and I wanted to play a few courses around the Rome area. Looking at their websites most of them say they require you to have a handicap certificate with you in order to play a round on their courses. I'm not a member of any club at the moment so I don't have gui handicap.
I also came across a website that says...
Get your recognised golf handicap certificate today. Including exclusive golf insurance, handicap tracking and green fee offers

Are these handicap certificates really recognized abroad or is it just a scam?

@Heavyballs, was that golf course in the Rome area? Can't beleive the pro didn't allow your friend to play, really bad form on his part.

That's a conundrum all right. Unfortunately, I really can't see how anyone could issue you with a handicap certificate when you're not a GUI member. So I would be thinking you're right to suspect it's a scam. That said, maybe they have some special way of getting around it. I would be interested to know how, if so.

The other thing you could do is join Slievenamon or Ballygobackwards or wherever for 150 or so euros and get a legit handicap. Costly for one trip but if you view it in the context of being able to play in open competitions here it may be worth it.

As for the pro in Italy who wanted to assess yer man's swing, I would happily tell him to stick his round up his Mezzogiorno. Even worse is that the guys went off without their buddy and played!!
