Question about regs.

I was browsing your man in Kildare scrapyard photo's there earlier I noticed a few cars with very low numbered post '87 plates, like this Kadett:

    4728614432_3b1d562faa.jpg

Surely this car wasn't imported after '87, otherwise it would have a far higher number than 31.

Was it possible back in the day to get a pre-'87 plate changed over to a post '87 one?

That was probably imported here in early 1987? Im not sure if i understand what the question is?
First 1981 car imported after the new reg changeover would have been 81 LS1 and so on?

didnt you have the option to change cars registered on the old pre 1987 format (eg TZW 26) to the new format (say 81 D 1)?

It just shows that there were 30 other 1981 cars imported in Laois at some stage after '87.

I would have thought the amount of cars registered in 1981 would be carried over to the new format i.e. say there was 3,000 cars registered in Laois in 1981, then when one is imported after 1987, the plate would be 81-LS-3001 if you get what I mean?

No,every year started from 1,the new system was entirely new,all the old regs in every county made no difference to the new system.

They seemed to start them as a new series ie 81 LS 1 to highlight that they were imports

    Not done that way.
I have 52-D-1, so the first 1952 car imported in '87.

However in later years they seem to have started the numbers much higher.
For instance 70-D-853, there isnt 852 other 1970 cars imported here since '87!

I think they started the sequence at 70-D-830 for some reason?

Maybe it was people 'converting' their old plates to new ones?

Interesting. I wonder why that would be,they seem to have started early regs in recent year at 20 aswell, you see alot of cars at shows with regs like 45C20 and 30D21. Im not sure what year all that was changed,as at the start, every series definatly began at 1.

Were Opel Kadetts sold new in the north? Or was it entirely Vauxhall? The car in the picture is listed as a Kadett.

They sold Opel Kadett D's in the UK along with the Astra Mk1 for some reason, although they were nowhere near as popular as the Astra.

kadett might have been the only car that was listed on the vro data base

Sorry to hi-jack the thread yet again, but after looking through that Flickr photostream once more I noticed this:

I wonder would this be one of the Montegos that the Gardai had back in the 80's? I saw a photo of one of them back in the day quite recently and it was in an identical colour to that.

When a pre-87 car has the newer post '87 style plates, it doesn't necessarily mean that it was imported... To answer to your question: yes... When the current registration format was brought in, there was (& still is, I gather) the option to change the plates of a car registered with old style plates to new format ones... The plate 81 LS 31 would simply mean it's the 31st Laois car manufactured in 1981 to be registered with new format plates.... Hope that helps! :D

yes but i wouldnt think there would be many people in ireland in 1987 that would have seen it justifiabe to go to the expense of re registering a car

I guess that would depend on how much it cost at the time! ;)

    I used to own 80 G 2.

I bought the bike in Sept 86, had a nice 'For Reg' plate made up, in anticipation of a 'new' reg for Jan 87, and rode it until the New Year.

Ooops, moving of the Goalposts meant the new system came in, and I decided to try for 80 G 1.

    Bummer, missed it by 1.........

Where is this heaven??? I'd love to go up for a look around!

Can any of the cars/parts be saved?

^ It's somewhere in Kildare, and it's not open to the public. You can order bits from him. I have his number if you want. Just PM me.

Your facts are completely wrong. One can take it that any vehicle bearing a registration number such as 81 LS 31 was an import, or any pre 1987 age related number.Take a look at the S.I 445 of 1986, for clarification.

I actually just found a picture of one of the cars I was talking about:
