Noticed in the car last week or so the oil light is staying on a second longer than it should in my car from cold start up, and when i go to start it back up after sitting for a while the light comes on and goes back off for about half a second.

Maybe its in my head but it never done it before, when i'm driving the car it doesnt come on or flick on or off.

And it recently changed the oil in it @170K, 172K on it now with 10-w40 semi.

Gonna get it checked out tomorrow, its a 1996 Carina 1.6. (as if half of you's didnt know :pac: )

Take down the sump and clean out the oil pick up pipe gauze filter.
Depending on where the subframe is, this can be a doddle or a hard job to do.
This pipe often gets clogged up on Toyota's that are not meticulously serviced.

Hopefully this possible oil starvation issue has not caused any engine terminal problems.

Could be the filter, some filters have non return valve to stop it emptying everytime you knock off the engine.

If yours was faulty or a really cheap filter it could be causing the problem

Now that ya mention it the filter that i used wasnt a oem part, it was a union filter as i've always used blue print or toyota.

The oil level is correct and its clean, i'll leave it into the mecanics tomorrow.

Well changed the filter to a Toyota one, doesnt seem to made much of a diffrence. Gonna see if it comes back on when i start it back up.

Well it didnt make any diffrence, so now im looking at the oil pressure switch or the oil pump itself, there wouldnt really be a issue if the car was driven for normal use, but as its a taxi there is alot of starting and stopping.

    Mecanic time!!

VB, tell him I reckon it's most likely a semi blocked oil pick up pipe in the sump. ;)

    Good luck with her.

Said it to him that i thought it was a semi blocked pick up, he then asked me at what miles i change the oil (every 3-5K) he said it wouldnt be that, but we went and changed the oil pressure switch and its still the same.

I aint ready to go down the road of the oil pump yet, but one thing that i've noticed with it she is blowing alot of blue smoke on start up when its been sitting 12+ hours, it clears and doesnt blow any more when i'm driving, could the fact that the oil seals are wanked that its some how realated? A taxi driver i know suggested bardals smoke treatment, i'm never really a beliver in these treatments but he swears by it.

Not sure if this would help but it's something I read on a Rover forum that a number of the users there swear by for higher mileage cars: swap your oil for diesel 10w40 and run the car for 1 - 3 thousand miles. Supposedly the engine cleaning agents in the diesel oil will result in a cleaner engine. Might clear up a blockage somewhere?

When the car is sitting for a while and then blows out blue smoke when started, then stops when driving , indicates the valve stem oil seals needs replacing. The oil weeps down the valve when the car is not running, so when started this oil burns up

Jaysus i wouldnt imagine it would burn that much to put on the oil pressure light!!
