    Hi,

I have some items I want to sell. I'd like to avoid eBay because of the eBay charges, especially as I don't know if the item's will sell and if they don't, then I'm out of pocket for the eBay fee's.

Can anyone recommend any alternative websites where I can sell stuff please?

I want to sell, jewellery, make-up, clothes, shoes, DVD's and magazines.

    Thanks.

You can try a few free advert sites, like Boards' sister site adverts.ie, or maybe gumtree.ie (poor reputation, full of scams and scammers). Failing that, a local free ads paper maybe.

If you're looking for something that has the buyer base and popularity of eBay, but without the charges, then you're looking for unicorns.

    simples

just list the items as €1.48, and add on the rest in the P&P charges!
    Result - no ebay fees!

Of course, if the buyer recognises what you are trying to do, perhaps not that simple after all!

http://www.ebid.net/ My dad sells on this, things are MUCH slower to sell than ebay but its free to list and end fees are cheaper too.

He is in UK, Irish version is a rubout

eBid is a total waste of time - not enough buyers or sellers.

Apart from being useless, ebid is also full of scams, even more so than eBay.

It's a sad truth, but there is no practical alternative to eBay for an individual who wants to sell online.

Actually you're not altogether correct about Ebay. REcently they changed their pricing structure to make listing items very cheap and the commission when they sell a bit more expensive. So you'll get to list stuff quite cheaply now whereas say last year you'd have paid a lot more.

Alternatively www.donedeal.ie is probably Irelands biggest online marketplace now. Very effective. 2 month add for €3 regardless of the selling price. Good luck.

Just want to share my experience of selling on Ebay. I was selling mobile phones which were part of my old business stock. Ebay charge a simple 40 pence to list which is harmless. You make a sale and then the fun starts. They charge 6% of what the item sold at excluding postage. Then to recieve the funds you must go through paypal withdrawl system which incurs 3-8% depending on the closing amount. I was paying on average 4%. So thats 10% in total. They have a VERY strict code of practice when it comes to selling. You recieve feedback on your sold items which can be either positive or negative. You can ONLY leave one type of feedback to your customer and that is positive. This means the seller is always at the behest of a buyers mood or if the buyer is magnifingly detail motivated they could leave you negative feedback. This feedback is tallied to an overall percentage score. When this goes below a certain point Ebay canel your selling privalages. Another reason you can get your privalages canceled is with a system I can only describe as Evil called Digital seller rating. This is where a customer rates your communication , item as described , dispatch time , postage charges on a star basis 1-5. This is totally open to the buyers perception of what good communication , item accuracy , dispatch time , and fair postage charge yet can lead to your barring if it falls below their penal levels of acceptability.
I have had 3 accounts removed from ebay under this digital sellers rating and in my opinion it is imposible to devote enough time in a part time basis to Ebay that will not result in removal of selling privaliges. Even though my products and service levels were excellent with a feedback score of 99.2% I was removed as a result of said rating system. Do yourself a favour , stay clear of Ebay and devote all your time and energy to advertising on alternative sites , Gumtree , google adwords and shopping , done deal , adverts.ie , and ebid.net. I have advertised on these alternatives and will never suffer fool companies like the arogant Ebay ever again.

they are actually called "DETAILED seller ratings" and ive never known anyone to have accounts cancelled over them

they do keep ur listings higher in the search results though so best to keep them as good as possible and more buyers will see what you are selling

ebay owns gumtree as well so that might not be the best solution if u want to avoid them

I would say from my own experience and from what I read on the Boards, most of us who sell on eBay hate their system and fees but realistically there is no alternative. To suggest Done deal, Buy & Sell, Gumtree or Ben Dunne.com etc as alternatives is just nonsense they simply don't have a wide enough audience and never will.
