Speeding on Navan Road!

Just got a letter this morning for speeding on the Navan road heading in the direction of town, past the church which is on the left hand side! I was doing 63kph in a 50k zone (thought it was 60).

The gatso van was pulled in up on the path and it never registered that it was a gatso van until the flash went off! So 80euro fine and two points for me!

My big problem with this is the fact that I was done at half 2 in the morning on a Friday night/Saturday morning! Now I'm all on for road safety and improving driving standards but I fail to see how a speed trap like this will stop crashes or save lives, just another money racket. I know that I will probably get responses saying I should have been within the limit etc, but seriously, its a bit ridiculous...

    /Rant over

A manned check point looking for drink drivers would I think lead to safer roads at that hour of the night. Sending someone a ticket 2 weeks after they were 'speeding' is hardly going to save a life on the night.

They are regularly hidden in the bushes at the phoenix park racecourse end of the Navan road heading into town direction (only on sunny days though)

there's plenty of drunk pedestrians out at that hour of the night.

I'm all for Darwinism thinining the herd, but think of the damage you could do to your car by hitting a drunk at 63km/h, they've saved you a fortune by giving you a ticket, you should be grateful. ;)

by having the van checking for speeders.. that frees up other garda members to deal with drunk drivers, dangerous drivers, public order, domestics etc.

having said that.. i dont like new robot vans or the old gatso vans

resistance is futile, your speed will be approximated! :D

would have been fun if his van had been clamped for being parked illegally up on the path. :)

Its at that time of the morning that most crashes happen.

On the front page of the Wexford People this week is the headline that the Gatso van caught 600 motorists on Ferrycarrig Bridge in a 2 hour stint.

One lad I know got done twice

The level of habitual speeding in this country is bit of a joke so don't feel too bad for those 600 people... However, I do feel somewhat sorry for the OP for getting done in the middle of the night.

With the introduction of private speed cameras looming it would be a good idea to take this fine as a warning and begin to observe the speed limits more closely. Currently the speed differential between "just under the indicated speed" and the "+20 km/h" brigade is just too wide stressing out both of the groups.

Does anybody know what is the official leeway with Gatsos, 10 percent of the speed or some fixed number over the limit? My car/bike/van over read between 5..12 km/h at speeds of 50 and 120 km/h. I tend to drive/ride at real speed of around 5km/h over the posted speed.

60 - 65k is the average speed on that road anyways, when it's not completed congested that is. Shooting fish in a barrel indeed.

Anyone who speeds through Ferrycarrig deserves to be done... its the single most covered area in the co wexford for speeding... no excuse and no sympathy from me

it is possible, if they caught nearly all the cars at the front of a ferry-dump... but I'd suspect the time period has been compressed a bit!

Yeah thats a good spot with the too steep slopes either side. We were just off the boat and loads of people were belting along, it goes from a 100k to a 60k on the slope so its hard to get the speed off. Missus was driving(my car) and I was roaring "Five oh Five oh" luckily she wasn't doing much above the 60 going into the zone maybe 62-63k. But if it was the day I was down there they could have easily got 600 people but a large number would be throw straight in the bin as they are foreign reg'd cars.

Hold on "its the single most covered area in the co wexford for speeding.." name me the single most covered spots in Roscommon, Leitrim and Mayo. Its all well and good to know your local or near regional spots but you can't expect people who travel that road once every year or so to know its the single most covered spot in Wexford. I could show you two dozen spots in Dublin and Meath but when I travel them 100's of people speed past me cause they don't know.

The correct statement is "If you speed you deserve to be caught".

I'm no holy joe I speed to, I just don't like people spouting on like this.

That's the headline anyway. It is a very busy stretch of the N11 Dublin-Rosslare road and lads are always lashing to and from the ferry. I'd say most of those caught are visitors, as all (most :D) of the locals know to slow down there, given that the van is a regular sighting. It was a Bank Holiday also

I noticed this morning Garda out with their speed guns on the quays in Dublin at 8 o clock this am.(beside the Clarence hotel)
doing people for breaking the 30 kph limit !
now that is really shooting fish in a barrel

its very clearly a 60 zone. if people choose to ignore the highly visible 60 limit signs then they deserve what they get.. as a local who uses this road on a daily basis i can tell you that when you do try to follow the 60 limit you get flashed and beeped at and over taken by all sorts of people including locals, strangers to the area and usually people rushing for the ferry.. with regards to your comments about "knowing your local or regional spots" .... if you follow the rules of the road you will find no need to "know" any area better than the next...

The Gatso van was in Mallow last year. I know a fella that was caught 3 times that day with it!!. I wouldnt mind he was told about it and laughed saying no such thing existed. He got the 6 points by the way..

This is getting really boring at this stage. If you can/wish to construct a rational argument then by all means go ahead, otherwise just don't post.

On topic 2 pedestrians have been killed on the stretch of the Navan Road between the Ashtown Roundabout and the Church where the OP was caught.

The location is listed as a location for speed traps on the garda website.http://www.garda.ie/sez/Dublin.aspx#map.

It mightn't be a bad idea to take the time to familiarise the locations of the safety cameras on the Garda website.
