    Hi
I'm planning to apply for secondary teaching next year - but I'm not sure if my qualifications are enough for the subjects i want to teach.
I studied French as a minor language for my degree and although I've a master's in history, and my primary degree included European history, it didn't include any irish history. Is it possible to take extra courses to make up the shortfall- and will the teaching council accept these?

Have you checked with the teaching council to see if your degree is eligible to teach any subject. That should be your first port of call.

you could do the irish history modules by distance learning through www.oscail.ie but check and double check with the teaching council that this course of action will lead to recognition. The teaching council recognises oscails BA if you wanted to go the whole hog

it's on the list of recognised degrees - for languages. My major language was Russian, which isn't mentioned in the list, presumably because it's not a popular leaving cert subject (although it fulfills all the same criteria as the other languages so presumably I can apply for recognition for it?)
Whether or not French, as my minor language qualifies is a little more iffy...there's no note to say that it had to be taken as the major in the teaching council list, and there are other degrees where they do specify this.

As regards taking top-up credits for history - i know the teaching council doesn't recognise my degree for it, but I really just wanted to know if in general they accept credits cobbled together from separate sources

Yes they do, a lot of people on this forum have spoken of getting credits from different courses.
